time to go

every day its just the same

everyones a pawn in someone elses game

try to do the best you could

someone comes along and says it aint no good

find someone to call your own

turn around twice to find youre all alone

and me im riding down that old lonesome trail

and if im lucky ill stay out of jail

cause its one for the money two for the show

three to get ready time for me to go

dealing with people can be a real pain

deal with nobody and drive yourself insane

drink to drown drink to forget

drink too much and do things you later regret

go for the silver go for the gold

go for the gusto before you get too old

:)

I suppose you could "slick" this up, audio wize....and some of the lyrics get "crammed in there" to get the line out... but then it wouldn't be this great lil' tune then, would it? I'm sure people are going to be able to pick out things you need to improve on, but I'm not sure this is really necessary. I really enjoyed it...and I really enjoyed reading the lyrics too. I like that....and the idea behind the words too. thanks.

ok...audio wize...

I'd pan stuff out more. harmonies included. Go for the Nashville slick sound...and reverb the shit out of everything. Get chicks for the Bg vocals. Stereo-ize your solo instruments....dbl gtrs...take away the 'distant' drum sound and replace it with some more 'upfront' beat providing attacks (even though they do a good job there), and redo some of the ackward vocal phrasing. Oh...can you sing it in Spanish too:D ?

you know...

this is a LOT

like Led Zeppelin - Going To California, at times.

I thought it was a parody/tribute, when it first started.

Weird Al Yancovic doing a parody cover of Led Zep... only with demo-quality sound.........

You'd never get it past copyright for the melody alone.............

"going to California"

I agree those verses sound a lot like the Zep melody, but many people have borrowed melodys before..

I actually like all of your stuff because it makes me laugh for some reason..

This one sounds a bit thin, or too much mids maybe.. not sure, but some of your other stuff sounded a bit warmer to me..

I did like it though..

I also like reading Blue Bear's comments on your tunes.. I'm guessing he doesn't like you!

At least he comments on your stuff though.. :D

cool tune jeap!

yeah...fa, me, re, do....over the IV chord.... that's definately Led Zep...without a doubt:rolleyes: Jeap...I'm guessing you got out your old Led Zep records and needed a melody. ...and those hardrockers fit your style perfect. Maybe you should have sung "F, F, G, E...." instead... similar rhythm...oops...can't do that either... "My coun-try tis (of thee)...." Let's see... welp...guess all the melodies have been used... too bad bud:p

OH

MY

GOD!!!!

DO YOU THINK JIMMY PAGE IS GONNA SUE ME????

hmn... i guess my only defense would be to point out which old english folk tune HE copped that melody from!

i hear ya!

on the one hand this, on the other hand...

since elmer is my folk persona im concentrating on a "back to basics" recording approach.

rode nt1 into mackie preamps and out thru the channel inserts to my recorder.

im using EQ now to make the whole thing sound pleasant next to old motown recordings.

my dingleberries stuff was way too bottom heavy and top dull.

i have some nashville kind of stuff and i agree this tune would fit a modern johnny cash kind of nashville thing.

you got me on the panning! i got lazy and didnt write down what i had on the tracks so when i panned i just turned consecutive knobs a little bit in different directions!

the first 8 tracks are panned properly (for me anyway) but all the melody instrument parts got short shrift and i even have a segment where the melody guitar and mandolin are both panned to the same side!

the harmony vocal is just one take and i think i panned it a little right! its got the "wide choir" patch from my b******* virtualizer and i think it turned out a little TOO polished!

i took 3 yrs of spanish in high school and 3 quarters at ohio state so yes i can sing ANY song in spanish (with the spanish lyrics done for me of course!)

thanks for the feedback!

:)

I was thinking "I know this is a zep song, now which one is it" before I read the posts. Oh yeah, Going to Cal.

jeapster... usually you write songs that HAVEN'T been written a million times already (e.g., peanut butter addictions). But this one was just another heartbreak song. Go back to the weird stuff - you come up with better songs.

Oh yeah - you could tighten up those harmonies in spots :D.

Liked the shaker.

hey jeap!

ok if bob dylan and zeppelin had a kid this would be it.!.....not yer most inspired lyrics but hey so what....cool song none the less...ithought the mix was well done(as much as my rookie ears can tell)...cool dude...are you playing that harminica????......

nice work

jamal

wes - i noticed that too! weird isnt it????

sabs - when i was a tyke my parents called me their little johnny carson! i was a class clown so i love making ppls laugh. it can be a challenge sometimes so thanks for laughing.

you know, theres a long tradition of "borrowing" melodies in folk music. woody guthrie never wrote an original melody but he has credit for thousands of songs. bob dylan stole his entire persona.

the star spangled banner is an old drinking song as are most church hymns.

since elmer is a folkie its only right that he steals from those who came before. no music is created in a vacuum.

ive been thinning out my tunes now cause i a/b'ed my stuff with cd's and found it was too bottom heavy and top light. i think its cause of my room. so im using EQ now to make it sound good compared to early motown.

blue bear never commented on my stuff here til i put him on ignore. i made sure to tell him i was putting him on ignore and life is much more relazed now that i cant see the vulgar language and insults and hostility.

i just want to participate and have fun!

learn stuff and improve my thing!

i dont wanna fight!

:)

3m - heartbreak song??? shaker??????

are you sure you listened to MY song?

this is a general whiny song not a heartbreak whiny song!!!!!

theres no shaker!!!!

THERES SPOONS AND SANDPAPER BLOCKS!!!!!!!!

i made the blocks myself out of 2x4's and fine sandpaper. probly shoulda used medium grit...

this is not the same band as before this is ELMER!!! he is not as imaginative as the rolling dingleberries!!!!!!!!!!!

jamal - thank god somebody understands!!!!

yes i have to play everything cause nobody here will help me. i have to do EVERYTHING!!!!!!!!

i tend to stop after a take thats not toooo bad rather than try for the perfect take or try to edit takes together. i dont want to still be working on the same tune next year!!!

thanks for the support!!!!

all im trying to do is improve something each time out.

:)

lmao..this is my WHOLE recording philosophy.......well dang thats good enough........

jamal,:D

Real nice!
Your sound is so original,I especially dig your voice, just great.
I could listen to this stuff all night.:)

I agree it sounded like Going to California for the first line in the verse, but the song definitly stands on it's own from there.

I really enjoy your humorus stuff, but I like this better.:)
Kinda reminds of old Neil Young, his writing used to be like this.

The way you layered the guitar and mando was perfect, especially on the lead parts.
The mix was very good, especially the vocal sound.
How did you eq it?

Really enjoyed it,thanks.

"nobody will notice that i missed the chord change especially cause (and here is the secret) i layered 4 other chording instrument parts on top of it!"

exactly! the melody is so simple and basic.

actually i came up with it in a totally innocent way:

my neice was rocking in her high chair and i was teaching her to say goo goo. the chair was going "chaka chaka".

so i started singing goo goo goo goo in time with the chacka to make:

goo-chaka goo-chaka goo-chaka goo-chaka

and it was exactly the same melody! and exactly the rhythm i used for the song!

i played it on my guitar later and noticed it was mostly on the 4 chord.

soon i noticed that it sounded like some old led zep tune i used to like.

but the thing is all im trying to do is sharpen the recordings and hone my songwriting skills. im not trying to come up with the next "yesterday". yet.

now if it sounded like "yesterday" then there would be a real point!

Thats how Jimmy Page came up with the melody to Going To California! .......eery....

I was forced to listen on cheap headphones, and so the sandpaper blocks sounded indistinguishable from a shaker. Anyway, I liked that part.

As far as heartbreak... I wasn't calling it that because it that because it was a "my girl left me and I'm real sad" kind of song. I called it that because it's another "things are real bad" song. I could have probably used a better word than "heartbreak." My bigger point was that songs about peanut butter addictions are much more interesting (to me) than a song like this.

wow what a great post!!!

this post can be used as an example for anyone who wishes to comment on my crap!!!!

i also heard an improvement in the vocal sound. a crispness in the timbre i think. i cut out all the outboard processors and went from my rode nt1 to a mackie preamp and out thru the channel insert to the recorder. a much simplified and improved signal path!

i think the next time it will be even better cause i am removing the foam windscreen from my rode nt1!

why have i been using the foam windscreen when i have a pop filter too? well to cut down on the highs (mistake) and keep the dust and humidity out!

the EQ is something i just started using. once i realized my overall sound was muffled and bottom heavy i had to do something. i always go for a formulated approach so i can do things without having to think about them. it would be nice to have a single preset button i could push for the entire song's eq!

what i did was cut 3db on the low shelving eq starting around 300 hz for most tracks. then boost 3db on the high shelving eq at 3k or 13k depending on what i felt the track needed.

for mastering i boosted the highs slightly with graphic EQ. i heard a tubby sound so i cut 3 bands centered at 500 hz slightly and that fixed it.

while tracking and mixing i checked against vol 1 of motown hits to get a pleasant sound.

i like the interplay thing too and its funny cause i do it so i wont have to play a single more difficult part. im trying to "suggest" or outline parts rather than try for the technically impressive part.

im working on the sound so i dont care about the song or the performance but i wind up learning new exciting stuff accidentally. simple parts can go together for an ensemble sound. ensemble playing doesnt have to be complex. simpler parts can mesh better.

hmn!

i always liked the harvest album so maybe i'll cop some neil young next!

:p

aaaah.

you like how i handled the chaka!

theres the boom and theres the chaka.

the boom is obviously the bass drum. for this song i selected a stick shot for the snare sound. i sampled my snare with a ld condenser and got a nice stick shot.

i knew the sandpaper blocks would make a nice chaka!!!!!

its smooth and somewhat precise. it would be really hard to do this with a shaker. what else could you do it with? the chaka can be done with a snare or an organ or accordion. maybe a harmonica. possibly a tambourine.

but the sandpaper block is god's gift to the chaka!!!!!!!!

ok the dingleberries will come back eventually and they know that the peanut butter thing was the most successful not only cause of the words but because of the dorian minor groovy feel!

and the buzzy guitar!

:p
