He means they require a lot more gain than, for example, condensers. A lot of quality, clean gain is often needed to make good use of ribbons.
 
they may not be blessed with a lot of gain, but they sure are blessed where it matters... great tone... excellent room mics...

I ordered one of these on Friday, which is why I'm curious. I've got a VC3Q and a VTB1 -- will either of those be strong/clean enough to get a good sound with either moderate-volume vocals and fiddle?
