Woody Ibanez RG321?

Anyone have any experience with the cheap Ibanez RG321 with the mahogany oil finish? It looks great. The RG line seems to be geared towards the metal heads, but I believe any guitar can be coaxed to play any style you want. Besides, I'd be swapping the humbuckers out as soon as possible.

What I really want is a custom Carvin, but Lord knows I can't afford that right now. $280 versus $1,000. Maybe the Ibanez could hold me until then...

I've got an old RG320DX in my closet somewhere...I like the necks on these things. I like the 500 series RG's even better though. As I recall, the only problem I really had with it was the pick-up selector switch became intermittent and noisey. I bought it new and after a few weeks I started "customizing". I removed the pick-ups...added a sustainer and put in some seymour duncans...a much better sounding guitar after that.

You're right though...they are more of a shredder axe. They're a comfy guitar to play and the hardware is decent...what you'd expect for a sub-$500 guitar. The pickups are something you'll really wanna look at if you're looking to play blues, country or any thing other than rock/metal. I like these things...they're great to mod and customize...if you screw it up, it's not like you've dumped a fortune into it.

I want a Fernandes Sustainer kit so bad! My e-Bow is great, but nothing beats an on-board sustainer.

Ibanez also has their SA160 that is another option that I'm interested in.

They offer it with the natural mahogany look, just like the RG321. It has a tremolo bridge that looks similar to a Wilkinson.

Both the RG321 and the SA160 are so cheap, it's a toss up. I'm sure I'll have one or both before it's all over with. But I will definitely be getting a custom Carvin as soon as possible...

I own the SA160 in the Weathered Brown finish (that's what they call ilt). I didn't plan to buy it, as I already have an Ibanez with the same basic configuration. But I saw it in the store while shopping for Fenders and I fell in love with it. Being an Ibanez fan already, I couldn't leave without it.

For the money, it's a great guitar. I use it for everything from Classic Rock to Country. Of course I set the Trem flat (hate the floating thing), but other than that I haven't changed a thing. I do have some Fender Lace Sensors I might put in it, but I am very happy with it and it's hard to imagine a guitar at any price that plays any better. It's light weight, feels great in my hands, and I think the look is absolutely beautiful. I highly recommend it, but I am biased toward Ibanez.
