While I have other trades working inside the studio right now, I've been working on the patio cover. On the underside of the cover, I placed plywood, and over that I'm going to apply this tounge and groove beadboard.

It's pretty thin stuff, like 1/4". So I was going to apply some glue to the back of it, and then brad nail it to the plywood.

Can I use the regular yellow carpenter's wood glue? Or is there some other type of weather proof glue I should look into? I'm not sure if the yellow stuff is weather proof, or if it even matters?

Maybe some of you woodworkers know.

Michael,
I beleive that the yellow glue isn't recommended for exterior use. I know they make better suited for what you're using but the name escapes me at the moment. Have you considered "Liquid Nails".

That's what I thought too. I just wasn't sure.

Liquid nails is kinda thick. I was hoping to just sort of lightly brush it on the back of the beadboard.

Try this link Michael... I haven't found your exact scenario but you may find something useful.

Glue

Hello Michael, I agree on the liquid nails. The thickness might be an issue. Maybe sit the caulking type tube in a pail of hot water? But I've used it for ceiling panels, and once a couple of tack brads were in, you couldn't pull that stuff down hardly. Especially if the backer is ply. You might try a block and hammer to tap it in place real good, which should flatten the glue bead out, and then brad it. The thickness thing is for immediate tac. Works good for vertical stuff, and since this is T&G, as each piece is tapped flat and tacked in place, the next piece will have a groove to pull that edge flat up against the ply, which will make the glue bead act as a fulcrum. Seems like it anyway. That might make it easier to flatten the glue bead.
You know, the old bead board was used because there was NO such thing as sheetrock. Sometimes it was used over plaster, other times not. Thats why it was usually 3/4" T&G. Sometimes 1/2" Usually Clear Vertical Grain Doug Fir or Hem Fir too. Have you priced the VGDF lately:eek:   OMG, you would think that it was gold. Twice as expensive as oak. Even here in "Doug Fir" country. And that is just regular old S4S. Add the T&G as in flooring and add .60 a lin. ft. THEN add the bead, which is actually a custom millwork feature, and your looking at mucho bucks. The stuff your using is probably the pine, 1/4" stuff huh? Did you decide on a finish?
You could probably use the yellow carpenters glue too. There is even a water resistant type. Seeing how it is under a porch roof and your in TEXAS. :D No fog, or really damp conditions. Even then, trying to soak up that stuff where it gets soft, really takes a lot of moisture, for a few hours anyway, and since it is horizontal, I doubt if moisture could creep in behind it. Unless you had a bad roof leak. Well, enough of my bla.

now im only 16, but ive worked with my father many times before. with the toung and grrove board, plywood backing, regular Elmers Wood Glue and brads would be fine. I'm sure.

HOLY MOLY! YEAAAAAAAAAA! I'm a SILVER MEMBER! Ok, wheres my badge:D

I don't know how in the world I ever got that far, considering my LONG WIND!

And how I made it alive this far:p

Seems to me the liquid nails gives instant gratification- Its alot easier to work with since it sticks on contact. Elmers is some strong shit (really- we tested it in a lab back in college) but you gotta still hold it until you get the brads in it. With liquid nail you probably wont even need the brads.

soo. blah blah blah- my whole point for replying to this thread was to say... you could just use a notched trowel to smooth out the liquid nail a bit. Alot like installing an acrylic shower surround.

...and by the way- we could use some more contrcution pictures:D ;)

Great.

 Now why DIDN"T I think of that DUH!:D Alzhiemers I guess.

Jeez, Rick, don't beat yerself up, you can't think of EVERYTHING - besides, gotta leave SOMETHING fer the "Cincinnati Punk Rockers" ta feel good about :=)

Elmers (and others) do make a more robust version of the carpenters glue, it claims to be OK around water after it cures.

BTW, Rick, Michael's in Austin - can you say "humidity"? (just a wild guess - south, close to large body of water, etc...)

Hey, don't mind the "SOFA" (Smart Ass Old Fart) (with dyslexia, otherwise it's just a dumb acronym)

Gonna see Santana in Portland a week from Sunday, so don't even TRY to make me feel bad, ain't gonna work... Steve
