Hi evrybody,
Pat here from Toronto. I'm a bit embarassed to ask this but, I need to convert files to Mp3 format to upload to mySpace.com. I don't work with Mp3s very much (well, ever) as I'm not a big fan of the sound quality. Having said that, they clearly have their place. I have free ProTools and a really old version of Logic at home as well as common media players like Quicktime, Windows Media player, and Real One. Does anyone know how to convert files with any of these?
Cheers,

Download a free program call exact audio copy, and a file called Lame.exe (the variable bitrate encoder it uses). Its an awesome bit of software. It'll rip your mp3s in a variable bitrate styleeee. Meaning when parts of the tune need a higher bitrate they get it, and when they don't it backs off a bit. That way you can get pretty damn good quality (I've seen it at around 400kbps in places) for only a negligble increase in file size.

MediaCoder

You can download MediaCoder from Sourceforge.net and it will do just about any transcoding your would want to do. I don't think it will work with WMA files made with version 10 of the media player though. So if you are going to convert version 10 WMA's to standard MP3 files you may be out of luck.

P.S. This is just a front end for a bunch of encoder types.

Thanks Guys
Any chance you know how I might do it without downloading a programme? WMA or wav files to Mp3????

Cheers,

Well I think you can do it in Media Player. But it seems kinda futile if you can download something better.

Just downloading one of those applications is the way to go. Their very small in file size aswell which is even more of a reason to download them, and much easier to use than spending time finding what program on your computer does work...

I use AAC compression these days, mp3 is a lossy codec (though has improved over the years i must say) whereas aac is lossless, AND is also in a smaller file size. Though i'm not even sure if myspace supports such a file type yet, so i guess mp3 at 128kbps will do.

if your talking about ripping from a cd just get a codec that will plug into windows media player and rip it from there..if your talking about converting from a file already on your computer you need a program..go to download.com and search there..some freeware and some not..your pick.
