Ethan, without a doubt you are well respected through out this website so I want to present this question to you on building bass traps. Along with thousands of others, I too am having extreme difficulty finding the ALMIGHTY COVETED 703. I have not given up yet. What I was wondering, and I'm pretty sure the answer is no but I'll ask anyway, is it possible to use 2x4 rigid fiberglass ceiling tiles doubled up, instead of 703? Armstrong makes a tile that is 1/2" thick that is rigid with a plastic coating on it. If I take off the coating and double up the tile, would that work? I want to build my bass traps to your specs, but like I said 703 is hard to come by in Missouri.

St. Louis, basically. I just found out today I can get 703 and Johns Manville from a local supplier. It takes 3 weeks, but I don't have to buy a truck load! Which is better? Mansville is quite a bit cheaper.

They spec out almost identically with the J-M product having a very slight edge.

I went with the Johns-Manville simply because the place I bought it (here in Fort Worth) keeps it in stock.

I paid 75¢ a sq. ft. for it.

Since they are virtually the same product, go with the cheaper. :)

Yes, but it looks like you already found a source of thicker rigid fiberglass.

If you don't mind ..... who was the retailer that you used?
I'm in Ofallon IL and the only place I've come up with is Fischer Lumber in East Alton.

BTW, speaking in generalities, the main uses for 703 (and JM) are roof insulation and duct insulation. So your best sources to buy it will be roofing supply houses and HVAC supply houses, not lumberyards or general home improvement stores. Of the two the HVAC contractors are more likely to have a need for small quantities of 703 (since a roofer would only need a whole roof worth of it, and it is normally only used on large flat roofs like on industrial and commercial buildings)

I found both 703, and James Manville product at a place called Negwer materials. It's located in Florissant, Mo. 703 takes 3 weeks to come in, Mansville takes a week. The # for Negwer is 314-522-0579. Ask to speak with Tom. If you have a fax # I can send you what they sent me on prices and sizes. Let me know.

hey, I'm just south of St. Louis also looking for 703. Where is this place?? How much?? And, do they still have some??
 
Hey jhag! Here's the deal, you can get 703 or Mansville from a place called Negwer materials. It's located at Airport and Florissant road. The number is 314-522-0579. Ask for Tom. Now they don't stock it but they can get 703 in 2-3 weeks, or Mansville in 1-2 weeks. Prices are as follows:
703 1"x2x4 192sf 94.08
703 2"x2x4 96sf 94.08
Manville 16"x96" 96sf 34.77
Manville 24"x48" 144sf 52.16

I believe it's 1" thick. Glad I could help the fellas in Missouri out!!!

At that price, it would almost have to be 1".
