i'm gonna be recording some "punk rock" style vocals...(semi-loud...etc.......NOT screaming though...lol).

all i got is a homemade pop-filter (2 pantyhose on a wire)....

should i keep the top of the SM58 on? or take it off and tell them dont get close to the mic?

thanks a million

shack, FWIW I'd start out with the 58 without an external pop
screen first. If your vocalist has a habit of "popping", add the
external screen then. I'm assuming the mike will be on a stand
rather than hand held so you can keep a more consistent volume
level. My understanding is that taking of the mike's windscreen
will make it sound like a SM57 (less upper mid range boost).
Are you using a compressor to help create a more even sound?

i compress afterwards.....but other then that - everything you described is how i normally do it.

58 WITH top, on stand...no external filter.

I vote for leaving the top on.

You might even consider letting the singer hold the mic. Personally, I prefer hearing minor pops and slight distortion on the vocal every so often on punk rock recordings. It seems wrong to approach recording punk with a 'lab technician' mentality.

And if you don't think so, then FUCK YOU!! :)
