Im not sure if this is the right place, but ive tried searching and cant find my exact qustion

I just bought a bunch of cable -
-Mogami 2549 for balanced
w/ Neutrik NP3c 1/4" connectors, and NC3FX-B, NC3MX-B XLR connectors

For wiring the 1/4" balanced connections, Where should I solder the red wire and where should I solder the blue wire? Ive found diagrams showing what connection is the tip/ring/and sleeve but Im not sure which wire goes where.

Also, for wiring the XLR connections, which wire goes on the 1 & 2 connections?

Thanks

for XLR in australia:

pin 1 = shield
pin 2 = hot
pin 3 = cold

in america pin 2 and 3 are reveresed i think

for the 6.5mm trs

tip = hot
ring = cold
sleve = shield

Thanks for the great links! I was aware of the Rane site, but not the Vandenhul.

As far as the color of the wires, what's important is that the same color wire is on the same pin at both ends of the cable! It doesn't really matter which color is which as long as you wire all your cables consistently from cable to cable. That is for your sake, and helps you troubleshoot when you need to.

Also, a cable tester is essential when making your own cables! Whenever I make a cable I always check it on the tester before putting it into service. I've caught a few mistakes that way.

Anybody know where I can purchase some plastic insulation sleeves for 1/4" and XLR connectors?

What do u mean by "plastic insulation sleeves"? If your talking about heat shrink tube, you can get that anywhere.

Connector parts can be found at Mouser for XLR or 1/4"

How many do you need?

The "plastic insulation sleeves" I'm looking for are the clear tubes, maybe an inch long, that slide between the inside of the connector to separate the cable's housing from its wires. It's thinner than heat shrink. Try opening up your 1/4" cables, most of mine (balanced ones at least) have plastic sleeve. They also appear on most of the diagrams linked to on this forum that have to do with cable eassembly. I'm thinking about just getting some really thick drinking straws.

Speaking of heat shrink, what size is optimal for cables and what part of the cable's end, if any, would you use it for?

Boingoman (as in Oingo Boingo?) I am looking for 16 sleeves for 1/4" connectors and 16 for XLR.

If you use the Neutrik NP3C, NC3FX and NC3MX, like the original poster mentioned, you shouldn't need to use plastic sleeves inside your connectors. Heat shrink should suffice.

Any cable making companies have this by the foot but it is unreasonably expensive for what it is. I have looked into this before. If I remember correctly It didn't make sense to buy it that way.

Not Oingo Boingo, just nonsensical jibberish. I've probably twenty or so kicking around if you want them. Just PM your mailing address to me. What kind of XLR uses those, Switchcraft? Heat shrink is an alternative, but I'd get bigger heat shrink and leave it unshrunk, just use it like you would the clear tubing. That stuff is a pain to get off if you need to repair a cable, if you ask me. Big straws might be fine too, like the ones you get at the movies.

Thanks, but no need to send anything to me. I've been advised to just do heat shrink and I might look for some large straws on top of that. I just want to make the best cables I can and some extra insulation would be nice.

Well its either insulated or not, putting more on really will not help anything

I'm not talking about the cable run, but the connector section. As far as I can tell, the plastic sleeves are used to keep loose wires from touching the metal connector.

Yeah, it keeps the wires from touching the connector shell. I'd still skip the heat shrink, I find it annoying and unnecessary if you aren't a complete asshole to your cables.
