Wiring an old CB/Ham Microphone- Help!

I always research the archives before asking questions, but I can't seem to turn up anything. I'm trying to wire and old Elvis-style microphone, EV 610, to an unbalanced cable. I connector, (on the microphone itself) has what seems to be only ONE terminal for a connection, so I guessed that it was positive, and that it automatically grounded out when the original connector screwed on. I then sodered the hot signal of an unbalaced cable to the teminal in the center of the microphone's connector. I then used a flathead to scratch (for a better connection) the threads where the original connector would screw on, and sodered the ground to that. I made sure that both connections were strong, and tried to run to an amp, then my mixer, both with no results, exept for a little hum. Any ideas? Thanks folk!
