Poor mans point of view
Until you start dumping serious money into your DAW and home studio, I wouldn't worry about it. Adequate home recordings can be made using RCA's and instrument cables. They aren't going to be pro or semi-pro quality but until you understand every component in your signal chain, it won't really pay off. Do a Google search on 1/4" TS (mono), 1/4" TRS (balanced), XLR, and RCA cables to get a better understanding of what you want. If the hardware that you have doesn't support balanced inputs, then you would be better off spending your money elsewhere.
In a nutshell, wires do effect your recordings. At a beginning level though, this effect is negligable. Understand Hi-Z (high impedance) from low-Z (low impedance) and when those cables are required. This should give you enough to start out with research. Happy searching.
