Windscreen for SM57

Hiya,

I'm new to recording in general, so be nice!

I'm just about to buy a locking foam windscreen for my SM57, which I bought as an all-purpose mike but also for doing some basic instrument recording.

My question is, how does a windscreen compare to a pop-filter in terms of its ability to remove unwanted breath/wind noise etc? Would it be nessecary to use both for any serious vocal stuff?

Well, a pop filter is designed to reduce plosives, while a windscreen is designed to filter out wind noise. Use a pop filter for recording. A windscreen is fine for live use.

OK, that's just what I wanted to know. What confused me was Shure's description which says windscreens are good for wind and breath. Obviously they don't include plosives as part of that.

The description is accurate. A windscreen will help with plosives. In a studio recording situation you will not be dealing with wind so a windscreen is overkill in terms of protection, doing too much to affect the sound.
