I am putting a system together with Cubase SE, E-MU 0404, IBM  server w/ P4 processor, 256 k memory, new 80 gig hd, Tascam 424MK3 as a mixer because I already had it. Now I find Cubase SE requires Windows XP w/ service pack 1 which is expensive. Will a cheaper OS work? At this point I'm thinking I should have purchased a self contained system. Thanks in advance.

I would get a LOT more than 256k of memory! I have 102,400k of memory and it's not really enough.

As far as windows, do you know anyone with a install disc? If so, go to pricewatch.com and buy a coa. It's about $40-50. Cubase only works on windows or mac, and mac will be MUCH more expensive.

Shrink wrapped SP2's run about $120 on ebay.

how can windows still be that much? i should sell my install disc on ebay, that things like 3 years old since it was last activated and i've got a new computer with xp on its factory disc since then.

if you are a college student, or just near a college.. you might be able to get someone to buy you a copy for cheap...
i had a friend buy me one for $12 (plus a shot of whiskey), you can also get the ms office for an additional $3 ...

i'm talkin sp2 - pro (none of that home nonsense)

but only 1 copy per student
