Windows Xp Sp1... Why Me???

I have been trying for months to get the Windows XP service pack so I can fix the clicks and pops from my USB soundcard (Edirol UA-5) and finally figured out why it wouldn't download. I made some change to my compter and had disabled the crypto(something). So I spent the 8 or so hours downloading it and then up pops a statement my Windows version is not legit. For those who think it probably isn't... %&!# YOU!!!! IT AS!!!!! I swear it is... My sister who is an old school computer geek and married to a state trooper got it for me through the hospital she works at. They panic when they go over the speed limit... I got receipts and the whole nine. What the hell do I do know?????

Any advise??? Dammit I need my 24bit files....

The only other option I have is go out of my DAW (1680) to a burner for a 16/44 cd to rip the file from. I'm trying to get the files into Soundforge...

You may have inadvertently deleted or corrupted a file(s) that the service pack looks for in its install. Possibly, a reinstall of xp would fix those issues, ot go to the install and press "r" at the prompt to repair any bad or missing system files.

What leads you to believe SP1 will fix your clicks/pops? I personally think your problem would lie elsewhere. SP1 has no signficant fixes as far as the audio end of the OS.
 
REINSTALL XP!!!!:eek: Too much software to reinstall... It's all setup just right...:(

I read on this board that installing SP1 cured pop and click issues with some members USB soundcards. Not sure what part is supposed to do it... They make not mention of it on the Windows website.

I have tried tweaking the buffer settings to death and yadda yadda and it helped some. When I record then play back what i've recorded I will hear a slight pop in the recording that ws not present when monitoring the playback device through the soundcard. Never hear a pop when recording to the standalone cdr. So it's definitely something with the soundcard or the compter. The SP1 update is the only suggestion I have seen that I have not been able to try yet.

Downloading again as I type. Hopefully it'll take this time.

Might just have to settle with th 16/44 cdr ripping.

Anyway...

Downloading again didn't work... Got to 96% and then it just froze there for hours... DAMN!!! $300 on this soundcard with all the in and outs I would need and it's not working worth a damn. This is fustrating as hell.

MY WINDOWS XP VERSION IS NOT BOOTLEG, STOLEN, CRACKED, OR WHATEVER!!!!

Alright I went to the EDIROL site and they say it might be a IRQ sharing thing. I looked up my USB ports IRQ and it says it's shred with about 5 other things... So I'm going to the lab to grab my docking station and see if I can set that to a different IRQ if not that then I have a old USB PCI card (half sized) I can pop into the docking stations PCI slot. I'll try that next.

I'm no computer expert but have been around em since the Commodore 64... Somethings gotta give...
 
Lazi, you can re-install Windows XP over the top of yopur current install. It should save everything as is, at least ift always has for me, and I've done it about 6 times. Specifially, I have a particular XP software "image" built for the computers at my day job. unlike Win 98, Win XP will not boot if you load the image onto a system with a (significantly) different motherboard than the system the image was made on. I get around that by loading the image, then before booting re-installing XP over the top of it. It keeps all my software & settings intact.

Check in the recent archives of www.winxpnews.com I recall reading a situation exactly like yours, I think the solution is in a Microsoft tech bulitin.
 
Nothings worked yet as far as I can tell...

Thanks RWHITE. Maybe I'll try that tonight and maybe I can get the SP1 to load while reinstalling XP.

I was finally truely giving up... Look over at the box this thing came in and was wondering how much it'll go for on EBAY... Had even tried another laptop with the same results... It's gotta go... I was going to go just buy something else with the very very little bit of money I could afford to throw at this problem... Then for some reason I decide to go back to the IBM (were I spent many hours searching) website and just flip through their entire laptop downloads... Is 3:00 in the morning and I was bored... BOOM!!!!! There it is... A fix dealy with USB AUDIO problems and IRQ problems!!!!!!!! :eek: :D :D :D :D

A 2 minute download and a measly little .reg file...

I just recorded my first few minutes and even though I did hear a few pops and they weren't in the recorded audio... That's what matters to me... About to mix down a tune using SOUNDFORGE... If it works then here come the BREAD SON!!!!!!!!!!

the USB problems only seemed to happen to me on playback and not during recording, but it always freaked me out so much that i couldn't get any work done.

downloading XP SP1 was the fix. there is a documented bug on the microsoft knowledge base for Microsoft Windows XP and SP1 contains the fix for it.

my desktop is in standard pc mode. i have my bios set up so that none of my peripherals share an IRQ.

my laptop is in ACPI mode. so sharing is permitted, but none of my peripherals are sharing so i'm golden.
