as I type, I am doing (another) clean install of XP on my studio machine. I am going to give it one last shot.

Any last minute pointers? e.g. what to disable? What to throw out the window? Any tricks that haven't been mentioned before?

Thanks.

It's probably too late, but I would suggest going into the BIOS and finding the setting for "PLUG AND PLAY OS YES/NO?" and selecting NO. This will prevent XP from taking full control over resource assignments, and doing wacky things like assigning all your devices to the same IRQ.

That, and drink heavily before starting... :D

Save the heavy drinking till after in case you have any problems. You will have problems. I usually start from scratch every 6 months or so to clean up mine. Just when I get everything just the way I want it. Why? I don't know. I guess I'm just a sadist, or is that a masochist? Either way it hurts.

Yeah, that's a good way to fix a machine. Just keep installing operating systems until you find one that works for a while :) Bradley bradley bradley, sigh ....

Slackmaster 2000

And what would be the alternative Slack, actually figuring out what the problem is and fixing it?

Fuck that!

But seriously, this is an emergency - I need to get a project done fast and I can deal with the random rebooting from time to time. I had to reinstall because my msconfig file was corrupt and a repair didn't work.

So, now I have the OS and the 4 programs I need to finish the project installed. I will go back to trying to solve this bastard when the deadline is met.

Believe me, I want to fix this muthalover bad. But the band-aid fix will have to do for now - no time for a cast.
