Say Something Smart!
I'm currently running Windows XP Home on an old Compaq 1GHZ with 256MB SDRAM.
It's been running great for the past few months, but since yesterday, I've experienced a few freezes.
Now I'm concerned with the stability of Windows XP, after all, this machine is about two years old.

Would it make any sense to run Windows 98SE rather than XP Home? Should I just try to re-format and re-install XP and see if the freezes go away?

Thanks guys!

It could be driver and/or hardware related since the machine is an older one. I doubt the OS is the problem. Have you updated XP? Have you run virus scans? Well...that's pretty much the extent of my knowledge. :D

Hey, thanks whattaguy! :D

I'll run that virus scan, never thought of that!
I also had a VERY old PCI video card in here for my second monitor, which I pulled out list night, so it could be remnants of that driver still left on here. I mean, that PCI card was probably close to 10 years old! :P

Anyways, thanks for the tip. I didn't think of that. (Doh!)

Cool, glad I could be of some help. Let me know how it turns out.

Well no viruses...

I don't know what it could be, I'll just wait till it happens again, and see if I can figure out why.

I highly doubt 98SE would ever be more stable than XP. Even on an older slot A 800Mhz AMD system it runs flawlessly for me.

Good to know, Polaris!
Thanks for the tip. :)

I am running a 400mhz Mitac computer for beat making, using win 98se, and I have never had a single problem, and this computer is almost 6 years old.

Good to know...

Have you ever tried XP Home?

Can you comment on the stability of 98SE to the stability of XP Home?

Thanks. :D

XP is far more stable than 98.
On older machines it may have difficulty with older drivers and programs. Be sure all your drivers and software drivers are updated to XP drivers.

Never used 98SE, but going from 98 to XP pro was the best thing I ever did.

Also, MS stopped support of 98 some time ago

Thanks for the tips guys!

I'll just see what happens with this one. I may just need a new machine.

It never "crashed".
I just froze once and a while, but I think it was a hardware issue, which I've hopefully resolved.
