what is this?
Alright, just to try and keep myself from sounding like an idiot before I ask such a question... I tried to search these forums for over two hours looking for an answer, so please be gentle... :D

I'm using a system with the Windows XP media center edition, and running Cubase SL3.0 and Wavelab Le (can't afford the 'real' version yet...). I have been searching these pages for information regarding mp3 conversion programs because I only have 20 available through Cubase. Through my searches, I came across dbPowerAmp referenced quite a bit so I checked out the website. Looking through the site, I saw it mentioned that it would make mp3 conversions 'a right click away' in the windows pop-up menus. So rather than download, I went to an WMA file (or WAV, one of the two) and there it was, "convert to"... I then proceeded to get as far as pressing the OK button before I stopped myself. Here inlies the question...

If I do the mp3 conversion through the windows menus, does it use up any of the 20 that I get through Cubase? I know it is only a download away from getting a program that will do it, but my recording PC is not hooked up to the internet due to the threat of viruses and it being a barebones system for audio only. It would be a little bit of a hassle to get it to my recording computer.

Hopefully this is not a RTFM issue, I have read through that thing too... Any help is much appreciated!

I don't know, I'm actually reading through that right now in the HTML help that is in WaveLab. Google might help too... Hmmm....

Try File/Save Special/Encode (mp3)

Alright, first off thanks for the help here...

I went to the save special menu and there is not an option for encode, so I think that my freebie Wavelab is probably a little out of date or something. It came with either my FW-1804 or my E-mu 1212m...

There are plenty of free mp3 encoders, VLC media player is one of them.

I used Audacity until I found cdEX.

A lot more options, and it's also free.

Media player or Wavelab LE should do them..no need to dl something else.

However, should you need a fantastic media player that uses little system resources and handles every file format....

www.foobar2000.com is great..

As in Windows Media Player? How would someone go about doing it that way? :D

Just install LAME and it will be an option in wavelab

WAV / WMA? Difference in quality?

Alright, another quickie... I am just using the mp3 convertor that comes with windows for now, until i get a usb thumb drive to transfer an mp3 convertor that I can download.

To get the artist info and all that into an mp3, what I did was save my mix as a WMA file, @ 48kbps, I think a little more than CD quality (if i'm not mistaken). It asked for the title, author, and all that good stuff when i saved it as a WMA through Cubase. Does that affect the sound quality any compared to exporting as a WAV file? I know it probably won't matter, I'm converting to mp3's anyway, but I'm new to all of this part of the process in general. I've never exported as anything but a WAV file to jack with in WaveLab, and burn to CD.

Again, all your help is appreciated! I know it's a pain in the ass to deal with these simple questions! :(
