Provide some more information Brad, how can you expect anyone to help with that poor excuse for a post.

Crap. I changed my mind about posting and didn't realize that is was even showing up. Sorry.

But, since I made 20+ people moist with my tantalizing thread title, I'll fill y'all in.

Here is my system:

300w P4 & AMD XP rated pwr spply (Eagle)
Asus A7S333 mommy board w/ SiS 745 chipset
Athlon XP 1800+ 1.53Ghz
512mb DDR ram
Radeon VE 32mb AGP dual head gfx card
Delta TDIF
Firewire PCI
PCI modem (56k)

Quantum 40 gig system HD
IBM dickstar 120 gig media HD
Acer CDRW
Acer CDROM

My crash problem has returned. System seemed stable after re-installing drivers for video card, I tried everything that had previously caused the crashes and nothing went wrong. THEN I remembered that I didn't try one thing: let the screen saver come on automatically. Sure enough, that crashed the bastard. The gfx card is in red because I suspect that little cork sucker is the problem (but I don't know, I am no expert). I have the latest drivers for it - they are supposed to clear up the problem with XP. So I reinstalled them again and whattaya know? Now the system is crashing in weird places again. Like, um, I double click on My Computer and BOOM! Gone.

Or I close a window... BOOM

Or I sneeze... BOOM

I am ready to drop kick this computer. I am ready to stab it through the heart with a pencil.

One thing: Since the crash-fest has been reinstated, no funny grind noise before it crashes. Just an auto restart and the stupid Minidump serious error has occurred message upon restart.

Is there any way to read those minidump files to see what is causing the problem? If it is the video card, great! I will just go get a brand that I know will work AFTER I go find that Elvis lookalike salesman who told me "Oh yeah man, this Radeon VE will work great with Windows XP!" and shove the aforementioned card up his Elvis impersonating ass.

I just want this thing to work. When it does work, it works beautifully - speed and space - I have more than enough. BUT THE STABILITY IS NOT THERE.

I'm near the end and I can't find my way home.
 
You have some screwy problems there for sure.

Have you tried running your system bare bones. Just the video card, memory, boot hard drive connected?

It could be a video card problem. It could be the 512MB DDR.

There is a solution to your problem, try the bare bones though.
 
Just in case you haven't tried checking here yet. Any Ati Radeon problems can usually be answered here as well as getting updated/leaked drivers.

Not quite sure how to do this - but I will be taking you up on your kind offer Emeric (emailing for help), I just need to finish the project I am currently working on for a client. Right now, I am just saving all the time (I mean ALL THE TIME) in between crashes (about every 15 or so minutes). The only thing that is keeping me from putting my foot up this computer's ass is the fact that, although crashing like a drunk midget in an SUV, WinXP still boots pretty darned fast. If I had to deal with the boot time of 98 while it was crashing every 15 minutes, I would've hanged myself by now.

Anyway, thanks Emeric. I will be emailing soon as this project is done (maybe by the weekend).

I like midgets.

I don't like SiS though. I built a box for a friend who had a lot of problems due to the SiS shit. That was a long time ago, though - and probably has nothing to do with your problem - So, I'm leaving now.

Here's what you can do to find out what the error message is. Go to Control Panel -> Sytem -> Advanced Tab -> Then select Startup And Recovery Settings.

From there uncheck the box next to automatically restart under system failure. After it crashes, you should now get the error string that you can use at the MS Knowledge Base to find out what is making it crash.

An alternative is when you go into your Control Panel, select Administrative Tools instead of system. Then select Computer Management. Expand the Event Viewer tree and look at both the Application and System areas.

So, I have decided to work through the crashing unitl Wednesday (when my current project is expected to be finished) and then start troubleshooting the system.

I have come to the conclusion that XP is not the problem, nor is it the hardware - I simply have Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde living in my computer.

I worked on the project for 5-6 hours straight tonight with absolutely no problems. WTF???? I will have pulled out my hair and pissed on the motherboard by the time I figure out this machine.
 
Just remember what happened to the dog that pissed on the electric fence. :p
