Hey there, I am wondering the best way to get XP - full edition i.e. are there harddrive promo-packages , rebates around?

Thanks

Check out www.pricewatch.com or www.pricegrabber.com and search for XP.

Pay attention to if you get a CD or just a license. Also pay closer attention to if it is the SP1 embedded version (desirable), or the original version w/o SP1 (not so desirable). There are a ton of fixes in SP1, and it should always be applied. If it is built into the CD install files, so much the better.

I paid $132 for a license-only copy for XP Prof a few months back, as I already have a CD. The Professional version is, IMO, a far better OS than the Home Edition.

I don't know if you are in need of any hardware, but if you are, you can get an OEM version of Win XP from a lot of on-line sellers. I got the full OEM version ( Pro with SP1) from Newegg when I bought my computer parts for $143. AFAIK you don't have to buy much hardware at all. Need a new mouse or something? :)

agreed about newegg, and make sure you get the "pro" series , not home...

not to sure about SP1 though, slick willy may have slipped in some DRM... we'll see or hear about it soon enough though...

How is it far better when the only major differences are the multi-cpu support and more networking capabilities?

willy, as in Bill yes, as in Clinton NO, as in M$ (Gates) yes :)

I bought XP Pro with SP1 from newegg.com on Monday for $143. They will sell you a power splitter for $5. that fullfills the hardware requirement, then reduce your order price by $5. because of a volume discount ;) .

BTW, I ordered it with a big ol' pile of audio computer stuff (VERY cool system - I'm very excited) on Monday morning. I paid an extra couple of bucks for "rush" processing. They shipped everything that day. They are in Southern California and I live in Southern California. I just used their normal "fed ex super saver" shipping - nothing special specified. It was delivered to my house on Tuesday! I'm still putting the monster together, but they got the order exactly right - and it was a complicated one. I LIKE these guys!

the best way?

I paid $10 for my XP Pro. No, no, crack, no apps, fully legal.

My school sells softwares with huge discounts to students.

So, go to the nearest university in your town and see if they offer this deal to students. Then just grab a kid on the street and give him $20 to do it:D :D Now, this wouldn't be %100 legall, FYI

I have spent tens of thousands of dollars with Newegg and came to the same conclusion. Accurate order filling and fast shipment. I've also had a few items to RMA, and that is handled efficiently.

i'm seriously thinking about upgrading my PC. i've always used www.mwave.com, but i'll give newegg a look too.

i'm also upgrading my desktop to XP, so this thread was a great read just for the XP information.

... hey wait...

i teach at a university. i can get XP for cheap.
