Just wondering.....Im getting a p4 1.5 ghz machine built to replace my 500mhz boat anchor - I've been using Win98 for a while with good results but also heard that it can't actually utilize any RAM over 384 megs

P.S. The only reason I left out XP is cuz the box wont have internet access for updates/patches/etc

Your going to have problems with both Win98 and Win2k also if you aren't able to download patches and updates, much less update the drivers for your audiocard.

I'm under the impression that you want this computer to be a DAW and nothing else. I would still recommend throwing in a $20 ethernet card/modem depending on your internet connection. Once you have updated everything, you can always pull out the card. Bingo, no conflicts if there were any to begin with, you have all your updates, and now your ready to record.

I would go with Win2k soley for using the WDM drivers and better memory management along with stablity. I would recommend that you seriously look into ways to use WinXP though.

I would say XP or 2000. 98 gave me hellish nightmares for many weeks before I just tossed it and upgraded to 2000.

---First, I agree that you're going to need to be able to do updates, even for a standalone machine. The OS, software and drivers usually all have updates available, and the reason the updates are there is because the stuff don't work right without them.
---Second, you can find any number of people that insist that this Win OS is useless and that one runs perfect, but no OS from anybody comes with a money-back-crash-proof-guarantee, and there's a reason for that. One truth is that Win98 is becoming technically outdated: some newer high-end hardware (videocards and motherboards, so far) have advanced features that aren't supported at all in Win98 and earlier. I still run Win98SE with no problems (on a Via board, no less) and I already own a copy but these days if I had to buy, I'd get an OEM copy or upgrade and I'd probably go with something newer- either 2K or XP.

I'm running a Anthlon 1700 on w98se with a c-port.I've used w2k pro and xp also but this current configuration is rock solid.I use the ASIO drivers and can record 10X10 glitch free with no rice crispies, running Logic and n-Track for tracking and CEP2 for editing.
It's horses for courses.I 've got a gereric box from fry's and this just happens to work best for me with my combination of hardware and software.
Oh yeah,I've got 512 DDR and could have even more, but most recording software reads off the disk anyway so its not like I'm doing video and need a gigs of ram.
