I'm thinking of upgrading my Vista system to Windows 7. I'm also interested in getting a E-mu 0404 to replace my non functional tascam us-122. I'm going to be using repear and steven slate drums. Your thoughts?

I'm on win7, emu 1212m and reaper, ez drummer, all kinds of plugs...

Works great

Make sure everything you are going to be using is Win 7 compatible!
Also if you are going to go to win 7 64 bit, make sure everything is 64 bit compatible or you wil have to run in 32 bit mode which will be possibly lagging in performance over what you have now and you won't be able to use the extra RAM
If you have 32 bit plugins (Waves, Sonnox etc) and want to use Win 7 64 bit, you will need a bit bridge even to run them in 32 bit Mode (like J Bridge) or see if your 64 bit host DAW has a built in Bit Bridge. This can be a little glitchy with some plugins however so check with the manufacturers to see what they say about it.

So long as you have all of your ducks in a row before you switch and have verified everything is compatible or that there is, at least, a workaround (like bit bridging) for what ever is not, you should be fine. If you just switch without checking, then...Welcome to Hell

The only reason I'm a little skeptical is because of this site http://www.rainrecording.com/windows-watch/. It indicates the e-mu 0404 is not compatible with windows 7. Furthermore, I checked their website and there is even a readme explaining that the 0404 is unsupported with vista (i assume that means windows 7 as well). However, they did release a vista (I assume 7 as well) beta driver. I've read a lot of forums and people who have had problems but also a lot of people who have got it work flawlessly. I guess I could always return it if it doesnt work. My main question is if it works on Vista how probable is it that it will work on Windows 7?

Speaking not just about music hardware but about hardware in general, if it works in Vista it should work fine in Windows 7. Quite a few Vista drivers work in Windows 7.

Just as Windows XP is built on Windows 2000, Windows 7 is built on Vista.

the e-mu 0404 is not compatible with windows 7.

Then I'm screwed?

Just as Windows XP is built on Windows 2000, Windows 7 is built on Vista.

Then we're all screwed?

Can't be sure, obviously, because I haven't dared try Vista or 7 and after hearing SO many accounts from people finding half their hardware suddenly stopped working when they changed over to Vista , I'm more than wary...

But I have heard good things about 7. I'm not about to change, as I can't think of any reason to upgrade, anyway.

I'm using the 0404 under XP and it's a fine card. Due to it's age, you can pick them up at very good prices. What I like about this card is E=MU have seen no reason to discontinue the 0404, despite it's age. It's tried and tested hardware. Only thing is - and a lot of other people find this too - the DSP Patchmix utility that it ships with it is rather confusing to set up at first.

Yeah... E-Mu doesn't work with windows 7. That's why I'm not on it using the EMU 1212M which is basically the 0404 with it's sister card. That's why I'm not recording with in ON WIN7 and that's why I'm not posting this.

IT WORKS!! I'M DOING IT RIGHT NOW

Win 7 64 bit is vastly better than vista. 64 bit o/s's ARE the future. XP is a dying beast at this point.

You can install a 32 bit DAW on a 64 bit o/s (I run Cubase 4.5 32 bit on win 7 64. While the 32 bit app cant access all of the ram that the O/S can use, Cubase now get's the full 4 gig of ram that it is capable of accessing (vs the previous 3 or so that I could get it under win xp). The additional ram makes a VERY big difference.

32 bit plugs will also run fine on win 7 64 bit. The bit bridge issues only crop up if you're trying to use 64 bit plugs when you're running a 32 bit DAW (or vice versa). As I said, I run Cubase 4.5, 32 bit and boatloads of 32 bit plugs and VSTi's....Waves, BDF2, Omnisphere, Kontakt 3 and 4, Easy Drummer, Antares stuff etc.... all under win 7 64. Runs fine.

Be very careful about the interface you select. This is where you have to insure that the interface has a solid 64 bit driver available. I used to have an M-audio Delta 1010. Ran the 64 bit win 7 driver for it. It worked pretty well. They can be found fairly cheap on ebay.

At this point, personally, I'm a believer in RME interfaces. I've tried lots of stuff and their gear has just proven to be so solidly reliable and trouble free that I'll spend the extra money and consider it well spent in avoiding problems and hassles.

BTW....I've run Reaper 32 bit on Win 7 64 bit o/s. Works fine.

At this point im only really considering windows 7 32-bit. I've just heard too many accounts of compatibility issues with 64 bit.
