Windows 11 compulsory Microsoft account

I got into Linux with Suse Linux V7.2 (i think). I was impressed with how much software came bundled with it, on a single DVD. The second DVD contained the Linux source code.
SUSE 7.2 included a virtual modular synth, where you could have multiple instances of the various modules.
I'm up to Suse 11 now. I tried WINE (WINE Is Not an Emulator), which can only work if a full version of Windows is installed on the PC. I didn't find it too useful.
Most of my Linux experience was in setting up a web server with a database and hardware interaction. This involved device driver coding. I learned a lot about LAMP (Linix, Apache, MySql, and PHP).
I chucked all my old versions of DOS, Windows, and even Linux. Something that I regret, because I still have useful software that can't work on newer Windows versions, as they ditched some old DLLs. I found that Me was the most friendly windows version.
I did a lot of DOS programming on an XT clone with 16 colour 640 by 480. Good old Turbo C.
I still use a USB floppy drive occasionally.
I never succeeded in getting any of my printers working with Linux. Only once did a printer work in brain damaged mode.
Congatulations on your accomplishment Rich.
I'm learning to live with Win 11. Also thinking about buying a mega bundle of assorted Linux versions, including a multimedia version with audio and video editing packages.

Hi @Slouching Raymond
Are you sure WINE requires windows? As far as I know it comes bundled with all the required libraries.
If you're looking for a linux version with bundled a/v software, give Ubuntu Studio a look.
Last I played with it it was an all-ui experience, unless you run into something unexpected.

When I tried WINE, that's what the associated documents said. Maybe things have changed since.
Yes, Ubuntu Studio is the one. I think 'The Linux Shop' is the place to get it. I don't know, but I suspect they changed their name from
'The Linux Emporium', because millennials don't know that Emporium means Shop.

I've had various Linux versions over the years, Red Hat, Caldera, early Ubuntu. The problem was that you didn't have the same type of internet support that you have today. Operationally, things weren't a whole lot different from Win/Dos. You still had to work between terminal and window modes. Add in that there weren't a lot of programs available, and it meant that it was a limited system. Great for doing some things, lousy for a general purpose machine.

The real killer for me was that the programs that I had and was running were Windows programs, not Linux. 25 years ago, I was in a group of gamers, Atari 8bit, Apple }{ and then DOS. We would gather together on Saturday night and play SSI war games, Infocom adventure games. I remember when I bought 3 Intel 10base2 network cards with Windows 3.1 for Workgroups. It opened up a whole new world for us, as games were just coming out that allowed multiplayers over network. Doom, Quake, Wolfenstein, Age of Empires, Diablo.

So, now that I have Virtualbox working, maybe the next thing will be to try to get OS/2 installed. That box has been on a shelf downstairs for years, and it was never installed. I think I got that one as a prize at a computer club event. When a computer build was going to cost you a thousand bucks, you weren't going to waste building one just to play around with an OS! Now, a $30 SSD and an old computer and I can play around with them.

Oh yeah, I went ahead and splurged on this Linux box last night. I've got $14 worth of memory on it's way (2x2GB DDR2 ram chips). That will get me up to 6GB! o_O

I would direct those here with W11 issues to soundonsound forum. There you will find a huge repository of computer expertise . The 'Man from Scan' contributes regularly. There is also a chap called Folderol who is very deep into LINUX.

Dave.

You direct everyone to soundonsound forum.
Tempted to just make hr.com a permanent redirect. :ROFLMAO:

Not so P! I often direct peeps on SoS to this forum and from both to thefretboard.co.uk.

There are many other audio forums of course and I have used some of them but those three are the only ones I recommend these days. Horses for courses!

I thought this might be ok for a Linux machine, so I got on Amazon and found a 512GB SSD for $30, downloaded Linux Mint and dove into the world of Linux
After hearing so much good stuff about Mint and Linux in general {I researched it for a good 6 or more months}, I went with it but I found that it crashed a few times in a few months and on a couple of occasions, the roll-back didn't work after working so I lost some stuff. In fact, my avatar picture is one of the things that I lost and I was none too pleased.
I settled with Zorin Lite OS 15 and I've dug it so far. It's been quite a long time, now.
For what I use a computer for, I don't find any difference between Linux and Windows, but I do really like Linux. It does everything I need.
There again, so did XP and Vista !
BTW, unless you have a really special reason for using an official MS Office, I highly recommend you check out LibreOffice. It's free, open source and reads MS Office files
Ditto.
There are some operational shortcuts that work differently from MS Office
It took getting used to, but once done, you find that it is a great little resource.
I spent the afternoon playing on the Linux system....However, I will say that even though Linux is really capable and powerful, it's much more of a pain that Win 10
I'm a real techno-crap ✍?{as opposed to a technocrat ?? } when it comes to the internal tinkering of a computer, even the simple stuff. To make most of the necessary moves, I need my hand held ? through every stage. I like Linux plenty, but I'd find any OS a pain in the patootie.
These are the two OSs that I use, plus XP.
They all make my head spin ! ??☄️
I haven't done any command line stuff is years!
I'm not the greatest fan of command-line stuff {or the Terminal, as Linux devotees refer to it} but when someone shows you what to do, it can work like a dream.

I got into Linux with Suse Linux V7.2 (i think)
I hit on Linux purely by accident back in 2019. I had Vista at the time and I was looking into virus fighters when I came across this guy {Chris something-or-other} talking about Linux. I thought, that it was worth looking into further and thus began the most serious rabbit-hole exploration that I could have done where computers were concerned.
To be honest, as knowledgeable as many of them were, I found many of the Linux exponents a bit creepy.....my kids kept laughing and asking me when I was going to hack into the Pentagon ! Among their peers at the time {they were 17/18 and 14/15}, Linux users had the reputation of being loner bedroom near-autistic computer geeks who could launch nuclear missiles if they felt so inclined !
Sheesh ! I just liked the idea that it was free and that there were developers out there that did this because they loved it.
A bit like home recorders, actually.
I never succeeded in getting any of my printers working with Linux
In all my research over some months, I heard so much about this and I was pretty apprehensive about this when I eventually got a Linux distribution {that's what they call their OSs}. I started off with Zorin then went to Mint then settled back with Zorin, although I looked at absolutely loads of them.
Anyway, after wondering for months how I was going to deal with CUPS and all those other arcane-sounding thing-things and the printer problems, I have never had the slightest problem with my printer and Linux. I have a bottom-of-the-range HP ENVY 6230 and there's just never been any kind of hassle. On the one or two occasions it hasn't synced up, I just switch off, leave it for a couple of hours, turn on and it has just connected and done the biz.

My spies?️‍♀️??‍♂️????‍♀️??‍? unreliably inform me that Dave is Sound on Sound.
I don't know why I bother paying ?? them !

Now, "hai know nothing Mr Fawltey" but I would have thought that if someone was going to switch to another OS they would buy a spare hard drive and make an image of the existing one? At least dump all files to an external drive?

And, whoever your spies are Mr G I can assure you I just buy the magazine and lurk on the forum. I have no other connection to SoS.

Dave.

The next step in the adventure was today. The extra 4GB RAM showed up, so a quick pop open of the case, remove one old stick and insert two new ones.

While I had the system up and running, I thought I might as well try the install of OS/2. The first one didn't take, because the system couldn't find the proper network drivers, so I dumped that one and installed without networking. That went fine. Probably 15 minutes and I was up and running. After playing with it for a bit, I thought "its a good thing MS kept working on Windows." This is a truly clunky system This was Warp V3. I don't know if V4 is any better, but it's clearly not ready for prime time. To be fair, all the icon based systems were in their infancy. We've learned a lot about usability in that time. This OS was a contemporary of Win NT, which was much easier to navigate.

I haven't tried to install any applications in OS/2. It's supposed to run Windows programs natively. We'll see. That's for another day.

Win Me and Warp.webp

I was just kidding you Dave. SoS is a great "mag" and your devotion to it is touching and practical.
My spies on the other hand....need a slap or two !!

Thank you Grim' peace is restored! The odd thing is, when I refer to HR or frets in sound on sound forum which I do now and again, I never get a smart a 'dig' about it. Only HR folk seem to have some ill defined objection to my references?

Surely "information" is what forums are all about? The source should not matter.

Dave.

Thanks sadiyad. Actually im not missing out on Edge, Skype, and Microsoft's cloud storage, because I simply don't use any of it.
I've never thought anything of Microsoft 'qualifications'.
For an education in software, I'd recommend diving into Linux.
The Lenovo is going strong. Typing on it right now.

My Win 11 Lenovo is going strong too. So far, 16 months and rockin' along like the day it was delivered. That crappy Acer Chromebook only made it 7 months before it bricked.

my laptop is win elevened , more than a week, how do i recover to ten? no backups it erased them after 7 days..

half the programs recognize the key or account?

i can use the recovery mode but that brings it to the first build of eleven. no number keys work. 799--997 no left shift
my asus tell me it has installed the lastest drivers. its an app

When I first booted my Win 11 Lenovo, I had to hit the Num Lock key on the numerical keypad to get them to respond. Freaked me out, thought it was broke outta the box. I haven't had to use the Num Lock in many years.

Windoze...ya gotta hate em

I just set up the wife's and it was painful. I use Office for excel and powerpoint. Not a fan of any subscription bull shit like 365... I just bought a office 2021 lifetime license from Stacksocial for $40 and installed it ...it's a legit license.

With regard to S mode all I can say is WTF?

No S mode for me

On the users and microsift account if you have office you have to have an account...BUT and this is for all of ya's You can set up user accounts within that same PC without an account. Most importantly if you are connected to the internet and going "out there' you should NEVER go out there in ADMIN mode thus the other user accounts. This is a first line of defense in stopping virus's from getting into your system. In non admin mode virus's can still get in but they can't get into the registry where the evil is done by them..

That's what I do. I have a second, non-Admin user account I use for online excursions.
