I would like to setup a dual boot win 98 system. One win 98 system would be for web surfing, games. etc. and the other win 98 system for audio.

I have a 40 gig HD and partition magic to help me acomplish this but I am running into the following problem:

Partition magic will only allow me to install win 98 in the first active partition not the first and the second.

Can someone who has successfully installed a dual boot win 95 or win 98 system enlighten me?

Thanks.

Also if you have any suggestions as to how many extended partitions I should have and how they should be organized I would appreciate it.

I.E.

Logical Partition C:

Win 98

Extended Partition D:

Games, other Apps

Logical Partition F:

Win 98

Extended Partition G:

Audio Apps, Audio Wave files

etc.

etc...

thankS!!!!

Not a partition magic fan. Return it if you can - bloatware.

I wrote up an article on dual-boot. It includes a link to masterbooter, a far superior app IMO. Check it out and if you have any questions feel free to email.

I too have writen an article on dual booting windows 98, but in my method there is no partition manipulation to do. This installation guide is technical and uses 98Lite as well, but it is easily adapted to the standard OS. Check it out atCollaboration Central on the bottom left frame. It is called "Using 98 Lite"

The only advantage that my scenario has is that you don't use a separate partition to load another instance of the OS, thus ALL your disk space is always available to you.

Let me know if you need any help.

Emeric: Good writeup.

Thanks Emeric and DS I had a feeling I should have posted this question before obtaining Partition Tragic.

I will attempt an install and let you know how it goes.

I haven't written any articles on dual booting, but when at one time somebody asked me to install Win98 English and Win98 Korean on the same machine I used System Commander. More than a year after it is still working ok.
One of my home machines can boot Windows 98 and Linux. This is done with LILO (which unlike System Commander comes free with any Linux). LILO can multiboot any operating system.

Bloatware - Software that is so poorly coded that it takes up way more space than it should.

Example - All Corel products are bloatware. All ATI graphic card drivers are bloatware. It's great when you need a driver for an ATI card.... 15MB!!!!! Don't buy ATI.

Masterbooter is 60K, partition magic is at least 100X bigger. System Commander is around 50X bloated. System commander is not such a bad program, better than PM.

Most microsoft products are bloatware, but what can you do. No choice!

bloatware = easy to use software
yes if you very technical and can use lil teeny text based progs
yes if you are willing to learn use lil teeny text based progs
if you just want the job done easy use bloatware

i accomlised the task you are requireing using pm6 and it works just fine.

Emeric,
Yes, bloatware is sad reality of life.
But, it is not relevant to System Commander or PM. As bloated as they may be, they will create a proper record at the boot sector and drop a small code for boot menu. From that moment on you will not have to run the "bloated" part of this software anymore (until next change, that is).
