Hi folks,

I'm a studio-in-a-box guy (Tascam PortaStudio 788) who's thinking of switching to a computer-based rig.

I have an iBook g4 with 1.4 ghz processor, 1.5 gb of RAM and an external firewire 120 gb hard drive that spins at 7200 rpm, and I'm thinking of getting a Phonic Helix 24 intrface, which comes with Cubase LE. Tracks would be recorded to the hard drive, which would be dedicated to that use only.

My question is, is this a good setup for Cubase, and, if so, how many tracks can I expect to record simultaneously?

Thanks for your help.

Bill.

The phonic can output 18 digital channels, which I doubt your external HD will be able to handle all at ones. I don't have much experience recording a high number of channels on a fairly light computer, so power wise I can't comment.

However, I can tell you right now that Cubase LE can record no more than 4 tracks simultaniously. Cubase SE can do 8, Cubase SL 128 en SX 256, which means that if you're buying the phonic mainly for the large number inputs, than you will need to buy at least Cubase SL.

As far as processing goes, you have enough ram, but the processor might be a bit weak. It might just be fine though, depending on how big your projects get.
