Hi, This may seem like a odd question but I was planning on getting a new mic

Sony ECM-DS70P Electret Condenser Stereo Microphone

http://www.amazon.com/Sony-ECM-DS70P-Electret-Condenser-Microphone/dp/B00006HOLL

the problem is that it says Plug-in power operation, I am not sure how much power it needs

I have a audigy 2 zs sound card and the mic port gives off about 5V when I test it with my multimeter and only does mono sound (i don't need stereo anyway since skype will be used ) (if a stereo connector is connected to the sound card, the tip gives off 2V and the middle ring gives off 5V and the last ring/base is the ground )

I used to have a Logitech USB Desktop Microphone which I promptly returned to amazon because the sound was flat and had a really poor range compared to my cheap $1 home made mic basically a mic unit from radioshack, soldered to a mono line-in cable

No, the connection protocol is different. The Sony is a stereo mic, with power + left signal on tip, power + right signal on ring, and ground on sleeve. The SB sends power and ring and takes signal on tip. The ring and tip are isolated on the Sony mic (they feed two different capsules), so it isn't going to work into a PC. The +2V on the tip provides almost zero current, try it on your multimeter.

Honestly, I would just use your DIY mic. You might be able to lower the noise floor if you wire a small cap (say 10uF) from ring to sleeve.

On a related note, I keep seeing these mics CHEAP on eBay, but they're shipping in from China or someplace, so I'm a bit leery. Anyone here gotten one of these? How do they sound if you have? (I have the Sony recorders that will power these.) I'd love to get one for taping rehearsals and concerts and stuff...
