Im sorry signal2112

I OWN a Computer Business
so maybe I am a total Idiot...but I had respect for your Questions so from my side it looked very much like it was directed at me.....

I too host LAN parties with all AMD PC's, running evrything from Unreal Tournament to Rogue Spear to half-life to diablo...

Never found a problem with the Athlon...the only issues I have EVER had with games come from Video or Audio cards...not once has my Athlon or K6-2 posed a problem...

i think it's already been said, but the problem with AMD cpu's isn't the cpu, but the motherboard chipsets. With that said, I have 2 AMD k6-2 systems a pentium system, and a celery system. The celery is the only problematic system i have. The others work flawlessy....really.
On the other hand, I was recently told that when you use AMD cpu's your .wav files arent "true" any more because of how AMD's FPU "cheats" on doing the floating point math. Well I don't know exactly what the guy meant, and I didnt ask for more details.....i hate those people who say "all so-and-so brand" sucks. that's almost always bullsh*t.
Anyway, can anyone explain or point me to some info that explains how AMD's fpu "cheats" and .wav files arent "true" when using amd? Or is this bs as I suspect?

Ok, I think it's time for someone who deals with this stuff for a living to step in. To answer the question: You might possibly, if you're using a VIA chipset motherboard. BUT! The same goes for an Intel Processor with a VIA chipset motherboard (and yes said motherboards exist, abeit rare.) I believe you said Viking 3 chipset...probably not. An Athlong will definitely give you computer problems if it's a Via chipset motherboard (KX133, KT133...) but doubtful if it's an AMD750/AMD760 based motherboard. The incompatibilities do not exist so far as the CPU is concerned, it's the danged chipsets! Via has some warped philosophy(I don't know it, so don't ask me to tell it to you.) on dealing with PCI and plug-n-pray. Card manufacturers could get around it with drivers in most cases, they choose not to however. Most people will have no problems or few problems with AMD based systems, just watch your motherboard you buy. To the fellow who mentioned setup problems with his Midiman...you prolly would have were it an Intel chip. I'll be honest, if you're looking at speed and games...best platform is the AMD Thunderbird. (Or Duron if you're poor like me. ;-) For us audiophiles dual-Xeon's with Win2k just can not be beat! Dual CPUs SHOULD produce lower-latency, and fast DSP.(this is speaking strictly on PCs of courses, MACs are better for multi-media, period, especially G4s.) Anymore questions?

A few points that will make all the difference.

A computer is more than a collection of parts and pieces, just as a car is more than an engine and wheels. It all depends on who installed the system, how they designed the flow through the choice of hardware and software. I build and sell systems for a living and for the dollar you cannot compete with an AMD chip. My AMD systems bury the Intel based systems in recording, gaming and every other signal intensive process. The reason for this comes from my knowledge of how software interacts with hardware. For a fine tuner like myself, the AMD is a much better instrument to use.

People use the Intel because it is easier to set up a workable windows system with their product ("wintel" ring a bell?). But in the hands of an artisan, the AMD is the better chip. It's like the difference between a Les Paul (anyone can get a good tone) or a Strat (takes time to work it out, but the end tone is Godly).

Finally, if you are using a mass produced system for your gaming or music making, you aren't getting half of what you payed for in processing power. Sorry.

Sheesh...You guys are giving me 2nd thoughts . Have I screwed up ??? I just oredered a pc with amd athelon processor
w/ 750MHz...this will be my maiden voyage with this processor....I have read about both the good and the bad...
The good impressed me more than the bad.
My main use will be for recording ... There are alot of interface, sound cards, and software that are compatible with amd/athelon processors.
(Isn't the problem a motorola chip in some sound cards?)
Wave/824 boasts about its compatabilty . I haven't purcashed anything on software, soundcards, or I/O interfaces yet...still doin' my homework and shopping...I am very exited about going digital ! This site has helped me temendously!
