Will a 'proper' soundcard make it all better, and what about a Guillemot Maxi ISIS

I've been recording now with an ART pre, Cakewalk 9, OCTAVA MK219, and a Soundlaster Live 1024 which sounded OK for a while.

Now the guitar is starting to sound flat, dead and muddled. This' 'cos of the soundcard right??, or wrong ??

I'm considering getting a second hand Guillemot Maxi Studio ISIS (which can be had 2nd hand for $150 - my budget - in the UK)which, although being a 20-bit card has got great reviews and the quality is indistinguishable from a 24-bit card like the MAudio AUdiophile 2496 ($250 in UK)

what do you reckon?

Cheers

Do you really need the 8 inputs on the Isis? Otherwise, I reckon you'd be better off with a M-audio delta 44 (24bit/96kHz). It's £195 new which is about the same as the Isis. Shouldn't be too hard finding a 2nd hand one that fits your budget
I'm not sure your soundcard is the problem, but a real soundcard (like the delta or Isis) sure would make a difference

Yeah, watch out for the cross-posting police... give me a break dolemite.. 2 forums he posted in.

Maybe, maybe not. Impossible to say. It could be your soundcard or it could be the source or many other things. How are you patching your guitar into the SB?

Is the $150 in pounds or USD? 150 pounds, don't have that character on my keyboard but that sounds a bit overpriced.

Like db51 said, how many inputs/ouputs do you need? This is really the important factor. If you do need 8 inputs, then maybe it is a good deal based on the price of the audiophile (maybe a product that is just more expensive where you are). More info as to what your intentions are for recording, and maybe people can offer some more feedback.

If it sounded ok before, maybe you should check out the thread where Slack mentioned changing the tube in his Art...Im too lazy too search it, so its on you, bro....as for the quality of Isis being indistinguishable from a Delta, slap whomever told you that....

Just for the record, I didn't intentionally 'cross-post' this, I meant to post it here but got all mixed up. I wasn't aware until now that there was such a thing as 'cross-posting', and that it was even frowned upon. Is it the BBS equivalent of 'spamming' ?

Anyway,

DB51: Do you know where I might find a second hand AUdiphile 2496 card, I couldn't find one anywhere.

Emeric: I only need 2 inputs actually, the only reason I'm considering the ISIS is because it's in my price-range, and it's readily available in the UK second-hand. I'd rather have a 24-bit card. That's 150 dollars by the way.
I'm running the OCTAVA into the ART and then into the SB live! with a big to small mono adaptor.
I don't think there's a problem with the mic as it's the 2nd one I've tried, and also the ART's a dual and there's no difference between either input.

My intentions for recording: I'm producing my own songs with a combination of acoustic and midi. I want a clean, clear sound that is significantly better than DEMO quality.

Gidge:When I said It's starting to sound crap I didn't mean that it all sounded great before and then something went wrong, I meant my standards had risen and I now want a sound that sounds like the sounds that I'm actually playing. Sorry, I didn't make that very clear
So the ISIS isn't in the same league as the Audiophile right?

Just to amplify, don't get the ISIS. You don't need the 8 inputs
and in the fine print you'll find that the A/D converters record at
16 bit. I won't tell you what to buy, but from what you say you've
acquired the ears to tell the difference in quality and are well on
your way to upgrade hell. Welcome to the club. The best advice
I can give is to save your sheckels and buy quality so you don't
kick yourself a year down the road when you feel you must get
better quality this or that. That's the cost that makes bargains
like the ISIS a false economy.
