Wil I buy and Alesis Masterlink

Hi all.

I'm in the process of setting up a personal studio.
I already have some excellent mics.
I have a Macbook Pro.
I am almost 100% decided on a Yamaha N12 with Cubase.
And I may get a Steinberg Mr816 CSx or Focusrite Sapphire Pro 10 i/o to record drums as I can't record in my house, YET!
Definitely: Adam P11A monitors.
Maybe: Lacie 7200rpm hard disk.

My main goal is to make good quality demos of my music to pitch to publishers and artists. And maybe to do some odd recordings of other artists.

I've been offered an Alesis Masterlink brand new from the distributor for €500. I'm wondering is it a waste of money. I've read the results of using the Masterlink as a mixdown facility are very good. I'm also thinking that using the Masterlink as a backup mechanism may be useful, so it might not be necessary to buy an external hard drive.

I also like the idea of using sounds from old cassettes I have. I'm just wondering, purely as an archive option is it worth buying the Masterlink.

If your audio is already on the computer I don't see the point for a masterlink. However, we have one and sometimes people ask to use it, so we arent selling. I sure wouldnt buy one right now
 
When you say "I sure wouldn't buy one right now", do you mean because of the quality of equipment at the moment?
 
I just don't see the point. An ADDA of similar quality can be had for less. All the DSP functions can be bettered AFAIC on a VST plugin. The track list editing is WAY better in any cd burning app.

The only really cool thing about having one (and even this lately I have done better on the laptop) is plugging the outputs of the mains at a live show and burning a cd on the spot
 
I agree, if you are mixing in the computer, your money can be spent on better things. I would look at getting at least one GOOD mic pre (a two Ch if you can swing it). The mixers you listed will get you by for drums.
 
Thanks for the advice guys. I was looking at the Avalon VT-747SP, it's very expensive but I'm selling some gear soon so I might add the funds to the Avalon. I have an old Roland MMP-2 which is fine and has some nice features. Or the Goldmike? Any opinions?
