Don't know if anyone of those is gonna do it for you... And that's my point. Each one of those and more will do it for one person, but not the other. Since this is the case, things must be test tested. However, a lot of times, testing is not available so we must gather experiences of different users and their results to narrow down our end considerations. Of course, most of the time, your budget is usually the end deciding factor.

When I'm miking bass drum for a "tight" sounding kit, I basicly have two choices; the D112 and the ATM25. Probably 70% of the time or so, I usually prefer the ATM25. But, I USUALLY don't pick one over the other until I actually try them both on that particular drum, in that particular room.

The ATM25 in a great choice. I don't remember the cost; probably quite cheaper than when I bought mine. Oh well. Don't let the money fool you though; and that goes both ways.

kristian, for toms most studios use sennheiser md 421's, they are realy good mics and seem to fit the description you gave. They retail for about US$400.
While we are off the topic, does anyone know if using two sm57 to give a stereo image, even if i will probobly re-pan them more to one side later, could have an advantage in sound? I would be miking a fenda twin reverb, both mics would be directly facing the amp, level with the center of both speakers and just on the outside of the cone, about 10cm back.
