Sir Cool of Coronado
I've been doing some recording with the NT1 on kick, and I must tell you, I like it much better than the D112.

Anyone have "non-traditional" uses for their mics?

All the time...

In regards to bass drum, I use my RTT VM100 and position it about as high as the top of the bass drum and anywhere from about 6" - 2' back from the bass drum when recording drums and want a more "loose" sound. I most often do that for jazz(y) styles.

By the way, I've been meaning to ask you... Where is Coronado?

I'm gonna have to give that a try Ammeth. I just ordered an NT-1. I use the D112 as well, and found it to be good, but almost like it captures too much low end. By the time I'm done eq'ing it (yes I know, get it right the first time... :) ) There isn't much left.

RE, how do you like the VM100? I just ordered one from taylor, it'll be here on friday (ohhh yes).

Coronado is in So-Cal here's the Coronado offical home page http://www.coronado.ca.us/ Enjoy!

Emeric, be careful wen doing it though. Dont put it too close to the sound hole (if you have one)

Is the NT1 really worth the extra $100 from the AKG C1000? I need a really good condensor, for vocals and drum overhead...and if that NT1 is a hell of a lot better than the C1000, I might spring for it. I was most likely going to get the D112 for the bass drum as well. How does the NT1 do on bass cabs? And is the SM57 still really great for guitar? I have an AKG D790 for vocals, and I tried it on my amp, the distortion is way to fuzzy and not warm or bass-y enough, like the sound Kurt Cobain gets on "Territorial Pissings".

I love the VM100 oh so much. Their is so much up-front presence, you can hear the resonance in the chest. I recently did a jazz recording with it and I swear the voice sounded just as present as an old Frank Sanatra recording. Oh so sweet!

I think it mainly has to do with the low-mid range "boost and enhancement" which is produced by the combination of the tube and cap.

Also nice when miking an acoustic guitar; whether it be alone in mono when you're looking for a not so "bright" sound as compared to say one of my Neumann 103s, or in combination with another mic like one of my 103s.

I just used it on a Fender chorus electric guitar cab for a client two days ago. I liked it for that amp, but I think when I record my electric guitar player's 2x12 amp for our up-comming album, I think I'll use two 57s right up at the cab (for stereo) and put the VM100 10' - 15' back from the amp and use it as a room mic for the cab. I thought of this during practice on night when I was playing drum about 15' in front of his amp and it just so damn good.

And then of course, there's the bass drum scenario above.

Make sure you post some results after playing with it for a few days... I have a feeling, this is a purchase you won't regret like I.

El Barto: for overheads I would use a different mic other than the 1000, just my opinion. Last time I checked, NT1 was around 199, pretty low. Whats your price range for overheads? look at www.oktava.com, check out the MC012 or the KM201 for overheads, I just heard a pair of these and was blown away, pretty cheap too.

Rec Eng, you still like the SM57 for guitar amps? Of course their popularity is widely known, and you look like you're a recording guru so I follow what you say...I was planning on getting a 57 to record guitar. Shall I do it?

And ametth, I noticed right after I posted that the NT1 is only $200...I was hoping to only spend $200 on a condenser and I heard the NT1 is really good. I was gonna use it mainly for drum overhead and possibly vocals sometimes (I have the AKG D790 for vocals) if I needed superior quality...would the NT1 suit me better than any other condenser in the $200 area?

I would go for the Mc012 if I were you. You could use it for OH and vocals, I know you wont be sorry.

...but if I had to choose between the 1000 and the NT1, I would choose the NT1.

Would the $80 make a world of difference though? I mean, would it be completely worth it? I hear Rec Eng talking about it non-stop, it must be something special.

Hmmm...I think I just might end up springing the extra money for it if it's so much better...it looks really cool with all the neat stuff it comes with (I'm an idiot), and the case...how much does it cost with shipping? I'm in Michigan.

I would figure a max. of $300US w/shipping & insurance included.

Yes they are much better than a C1000. You get a lot more than what you'd think for the extra $80US; and that's just thinking about the cardioid cap. I consider the other 2 caps as free.

Oh yeah 57s for electric guitar amps and snares all the way. I'll say I prefer a 57 over most other mics at least 70% of the time.

In fact, I like them on toms too at least 50% of the time...

Thanks Rec Eng, that's exactly what I wanted to hear. I didn't wanna have to spend another assload for a mic for guitar. I just wanna make sure, when people say "drum overhead," doesn't that mean putting the mic above the set so it captures the snare, toms, and cymbals? Or am I missing something? And for the kick drum, would you suggest the D112 or the NT1? Which would be better? The kick drum mic will also be used to record the bass cab if I don't just record the bass direct in.

choosing a mic for the kick drum is a matter of prefrence. I'm partial to the NT1 now, instead of the D112. Some people here use an AT mic. You could also use an MD421. It's all a matter of what sounds good to you. I think your best bet would be bringing your kick drum to the store and trying out different mics, then choosing like that.

uhh.. maybe not totally particularly about NT-1s but since we're off the topic. Im just wondering what large diaphragm dynamic mics are out there for toms? i remember at a good studio i was at they used dynamics with large diaphragms that were side input. they sounded good.

Well, I want a punch...a nice bass sound with a high end punch. Steve Albini is known for his great micing of drums...if you've heard In Utero, you'd know what I'm talkin about. That's a sweet hard punch sound he got on the bass drum. I want more of a precence than just a thump...the best I can describe it is punch...

The song (not the album) Sgt. Pepper's is a good example of the sound I'm looking for in drums/bass in general...just a touch louder and touch "heavier"...warmer I guess.

It's still just preference. Some swear by the D112, some the AT ATM25, some the E/V RE-20, others the Neumann U47fet, etc. And they all may be discribing the same results in words... The real answer is what gets to tape.

That's my case, there's not much of a way to test it. Although, when I bought my D790, the guy at Guitar Center said I could test it for two days and if I didn't like it, trade it...so that's what I may do, assuming the ATM25 is $200. The NT1 and D112 are both $200.

So any one of those would really do it for me? How much is the ATM25? And do each of those mics vary greatly with the kick drum sound?
