Why this lag?!

I have laid out around 4-5 vocal tracks in cubase...i'm using about 4-5 insert effects per vocal track...i dont know for some reason..whenever i playback the project, it lags like crap. the cpu usage skyrockets to 90%+.

as far as my PC go...it's a P4 2.8ghz with 1gb ram. hard drive is totally adequate. how could i fix this? it's really bugging me as i can't even work properly on cubase. thanks...
 
What are you recording at? 16/44? 24/96? What plugins are you using on each vocal and do you have other tracks too in the project?

it could be a number of things. First try freezing the tracks and see if that fixes it.

What plugins are u using?

Also check your sound card buffer settings, they should be high latency, not low
 
I'm using some stock cubase plugins like modelay, reverb A, Q filter...asides that, C1 comp for compression.

How do i freeze tracks? heard of it but never tried it out before.

yeah, i'm recording at 16/44. buffer size is set to 384 samples. this really sucks! :(
 
First off, your latency is way to low. Crank it up to 512 at least, it does not need to be low for mixing, only recording and tracking

the freeze function will effectively render the track as audio (it will not be editable until unfrozen) and will free up cpu.

there are other tricks i can go into but are alot more technical but try those first
 
But how do i actually freeze the tracks in Cubase sx3?
 
oop. sorry, was just about to edit my post to mention that..

its the little snowflake icon on each tracks channel strip
 
After i try to unfreeze the track, it asks if i want to keep the frozen files...do i keep them or do i just unfreeze them?

You can do either. Freezing is rendering the individual track so it actually makes and audio file of all the tracks plugs, automation, etc but allows you to switch back to the normal track at will
