Why the little pops?

You ever get that little pop/snap sound when you stop a track, or cue it during playback? Or sometimes if a clip isn't faded out just right? What is that from? Why isn't there an algorithm to get rid of that? Some people say they don't get that, but I wonder if they just don't hear it or pay that close attention. I've heard it on multiple computer setups.
