Why is nobody into the Mixing contests???

That is why I like them.
You post a mix and several others rip them apart then you fix it again.
I'm not doing it to come in first place. I am doing it to learn from my mistakes.
Granted people have their own opinions, but most of the time their opinion is better than mine.

Then it should be called something other than a mix "contest?"

;)

Perhaps, a mix "class?" or "lesson?"

My idea of a mix contest is to offer up the tracks for the contest and then let the contestants download the tracks and submit their BEST mix. Then the judges would listen to each mix, and judge the merits, creativity, etc., of each mix and compare them all to each other to find who created the best mix.
RAMI's mix off went that way. I thought it turned out great!! :)

Yah...I need some clarification as to what is expected of the judging section.

I have not listened to one of the pre-mixes in Perdicaments mix contest. I thought if it were a contest, it would not to be fair to lead anyone anywhere with their mix...but if it is a "mix class"...then I would be happy to listen to all of them, in their different stages of mixing.

Perhaps 7 string has a very good suggestion, in that the wording of them be just slighty variatied, to capture the true intent of the poster.

I THINK EVERYONE'S JUST TOO SCARED BECAUSE I'M SO GOOD.

I've never tried to mix someone elses stuff before. Sounds fun. How does it work? They provide the tracks, I import them to a blank project, and mix it all together?

Would anybody be up to a mixing/learning contest that everybody has to use the same (free) software like Reaper and the (free) plugins like Kjaerhus classic and digitalfishphones? (sorry to the 3 mac users :p :p )
Then you could share your session files and get a better idea how others set up and mix the song?

Exactly! Someone provides a link to their tracks and you download them and then mix them. Once you have a mix, you post a link to it, the judges download your mix, listen to it and then tell you how THEY want it to sound. You keep fixing it until they tell you it sounds exactly the way they would have mixed it. It doesn't matter how YOU would mix the song, only how THEY would mix the song.

:)

:D :D

Well that's certainly pretty lame. Oh well, I'm mixing the song right now and having fun with it. It's not my genre of music and I've never mixed someone elses stuff before, so I'm learning as I go.

It's a bit time consuming and not very interesting to me.
Don't you people have your own stuff to record and mix? ;)

In general, no one cares about my stuff and I don't care for 95% of the stuff I hear. Just personal taste, that's all, everyone has their own niche and particular musical style.

It seems way more productive to record and mix your own stuff unless that's all you want to be is a mixer of other peoples stuff and you have tons of free time with nothing else to do.

If you are into mixing other peoples stuff, then by all means, go for it. :)

It can be a learning experience, but I wouldn't let anyone else mix my stuff, it's so personal and other peoples opinions about what sounds good are not yours in most cases.

I've noticed that most people that say "i wouldn't let anyone else mix my stuff" aren't good at mixing.

That's all that counts! And, trust me, you'll learn from those judges too. THEY may take the song in a totally different direction than you would have and it may open your eyes to something. Now that is a GOOD thing, if you're just "talking" mixes. But in a mix "contest"...

Well I'm enjoying mixing that song. Like I said, its a learning experience. I didn't have anything to do with the song selection, tracking, or performance. All I can do is try to make it sound good and interesting. I didn't even listen to anyone else's mix as I don't want anyone else's ideas to sway my own. Once it's all done, I'll listen to the other mixes to see how others did it. It's not a 'contest' to me, it's just a bunch of tracks to mix together. I don't see whats so bad about that.

Well I'm just busy as hell. I try to get into them I make a quick mix and upload that then all of a sudden I got like 3 or 4 other projects that take precedence before the mix contest. And by the time I can get back to it the contest is usually over.

i'll start this off with I LOVE PMCS (or whatever you want to call em). i think it's GREAT getting to mix some stuff that's not mine, and the education one gets when hearing other folks' takes on the mixes can't be beat. i find it fascinating how so many people can hear the same raw tracks and come up with suck different mixes.

that said, my involvement in them is pretty minimal.

1. I'm stuck on satellite for internet. it's better than dialup, but there's a download cap of 150MB per 3 hour window. most of the track ZIPs tend to be of the 175-300MB (or more) size, even when they're broken down. so #1, i just can't download em.

for xfinster's last PMC (PMC12 with the metal tune and 600+MB of tracks), i was one of those sad saps who had to have someone send them the tracks on a cd. :(

2. i've got a toddler at home. so most of my "recording time" is in the late evening after i've put him to bed.......so time is of the essence, and i have to really like something in order to devote that much of my time to it.

3. most of the tunes posted of late have been of the metal/screamo genre.....and like lemontree said, i got bored with that stuff a long time ago.

that's not to say i don't enjoy that stuff on occasion......but i don't want to sit in front of the speakers for hours on end mixing something that i don't *totally* enjoy. there's only so much "throat grunting" i can take, really. and since this is a "for pleasure" thing and not something getting me extra cash (as in a band contracted me to record/mix it), if i don't totally enjoy it, i'm just not gonna spend my time on it.

unfortunately, all of this means that i wait for someone to post a mix before i even think about downloading the tracks.....and that's assuming i even CAN.

cheers,
wade

PS--just for kicks a couple weeks ago i pulled out the tracks for "Sky" (which was PMC11, iirc) and remixed that now that i'm running new monitors. i REALLY love that song. and i wish i'd been able to submit the mix i came up with a couple weeks ago for my "final" instead of the one i did submit.

you know, i always forget to do these. i'm gonna give it a try now.

That's what you call a "Freudian Slip".

I think this is the biggest issue that I've seen mentioned on here. Too much "hard", "metal", "screamo"; what-have-you... I can't even listen to that stuff long enough to tell someone else what is wrong with their mix, let alone spend anywhere from 3 to 10 hours myself mixing it. The guitars and such I don't mind. I really can't get into those vocals, however...

i LOVE me some hard rock. hell, i LOVE me some metal. as long as it's got someone *singing*.

that "throat grunting/screaming" stuff, though.....i really can't get into. IMO, that "vocal style" has ruined MANY an otherwise great instrumental backing track. to each their own, i guess.

where are the Bruce Dickinsons, Geoff Tates and James LaBries of the world when you need em? hell, i'll even settle for some like King Diamond. :D :p

cheers,
wade
