Why is metal dead?

I wouldn't call myself a metal-head, but I do like some, mostly '80's era. I think that is when metal really hit it's peak. Bands like Zeppelin and Black Sabbath and Rainbow were kind of at the leading edge, but the main body of what I think of as metal happened during the '80's. I don't consider shredding metal at all. A distorted guitar does not metal make, my friends. Satriani and Vai are not metal. I don't think Van Halen is metal either. Metal is darker than that. You do not hear a dominant 7 chord in metal. Metal is all about dark, brooding vocals with big screams, power chords and double kick drumming and tight, intricate punches. So here is a non-metal-head's view of metal bands:

Iron Maiden rocks (with Powerslave being my personal favorite) Saw them with Twisted Sister on the Powerslave tour. Probably the greatest rock spectacle I've ever seen. 60 foot mummified Eddie with flames shootin' out the eyes! Ya BABY!

Judas Preist is the epitome of metal to me. (with Screaming for Vengeance my personal fav)

Ronny James Dio is a master (Holy Diver)

I liked RATT back in the day, but listening to them now all I notice is that their timing as a band was terrible, especially the vocals. Somebody give those boys a metronone. And by the way...somebody fire whoever mastered those albums. Every tail is chopped off. I'm sure it was an artistic choice... a bad one.

Never a huge Metallica fan.

Ozzy was alright. Never like the production of a single Ozzy album, though Jake and Zakk I really dug. Not so much Randy. (running for cover)

Twisted Sister was too goofy to ever be cool. Like Kiss with a laugh-track.

Scorpions - dug 'em, but after a while Klause's German accent gets on my nerves.

Motley Crew - never a huge fan. Whoever said metal is all about guitar virtuosity never listed to Mick Mars. What a dud.

Dokken was OK. George had a great style, but his tone was terrible at times I thought. In My Dreams is one of my all time fav solos though.

Others I liked: Queensryche, Fate's Warning, TNT...

Anway.... I could go on and on. Let me just say this regarding "nu-metal": it seems like a race to see who can come up with the weirdest eyeballs. We got big black pupil monkey eyes, we got glowing alien eyes, we got mis-matched eyes. What's with that?? I s'pose if you're into weird eyes it's neat.

As for me, I'm into music.

Kinda like the Eddie Murphy bit where he imitates Ralph Cramden: "Norton, I been watchin' you. And I know you've been watchin' me. You watch me, I know! And you know that I know that you know that I know that you've been watchin' me." :D

I'll only pick it up if the guitarist can drive 145 mph.
;)
I'll tell you, the first time I heard "Voracious Souls" it seemed to me they were playing 145 mph. Of course I was tripping on acid at the time. . . . :D :p ;) :D

No its a nerd joke, its from some old nintendo game made in japan, the translation was so bad it became kind of famous.I guess some sort of villan was declaring his conquest of the others territory and it came out "All your bass are belong to us!"

RANT FROM HELL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am overwhelmed by the amount of unintelligent life forms that are drifting around here. Especially the post way back that anybody in a band that is 20 or under is not metal. I just turned 22, i was in my band when i was 20. We are not like Rob Halford whips, and chains, leather, and spikes. WE are heavier than fuck, and i've played metal since i picked up a guitar. Just because folks are young doesn't mean that they aren't, or can't be into metal. FUCK EVERYONE ON HERE THAT THINKS THEY KNOW TRUE METAL...it is a perspective thing...don't worry about labeling everything and create something heavy to prove your sssssssssssoooooooooooo metal. I can't stand people talking about how great the And Justice tone was and then talk about how guitar tones sound like piss when you suck all the mids out. People that think triggering drums is not metal, i hate to tell you guys but most heavy bands that are really heavy trigger at least thier bass drums. Most peoplr on here also think that Led Zepplin, was a metal band...i think they should fall in the hard rock category myself...but that is a personal opinion. And people that say Metallica sucks because they chose different routes. Fuck they dominated thrash style metal...and wanted to try other things. Wait for the new album, i think many of you OLD METALLICA fan will have a little foot in mouth problem. The albums after the Black album are justas good as good as their really heavy work...just geared into different genres. SLayer is also one of my favorite bands...but they have some of the most horrible guitar tone known to man...and for people that think that Dimebag Darrel is overrated...write some music. Because all of the posts from these people that talk all this shit...there music doesn't even come close to backing it up. I listen to all things heavy...be it new old, and not so heavy stuff occasionaly. And my last and final rant the band Slipknot is not NU-Metal...in league with Linkin Park, Papa Roach. The music is Death Metal. If they hadn't come onto the scene when they did, and they didn't ware jumpsuits and masks...defined on their music alone they would be considered Death MetaL. I am done now, but this shit was staring to get on my nerves...if it's heavy who gives a fuck...just enjoy what you like and don't shit on other peoples joy...that is retarded as fuck!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

All your metal are belong to me.

Make your time.

Well, for one...
I like the tone on Justice, because it's friggin heavy. And, yes, they might have cut all the mids, but Metallica is known for 6-double tracking the guitar parts, cutting everything under 100Hz to get rid of the mud and voila; a heavy sound.

Also, Dimebag rules! I must say I'm more into older Pantera (Vulgar, Cowboys), but the songs are nice and his solo's are cool.

Yes, George Lynch' tone is thin, but it suits the era and band.

I don't consider Deep Purple, Cream or Led Zeppelin metal... they might have been the (fore)fathers of hard rock, but not metal. Metal started with Sabbath and Priest. IMHO. (Oh, and the Beatles' "Helter Skelter" )

I KNOW true metal, eventhough I'm as old as you Analytical Man. :p
I've been playing metal since I was 13, played in different metalbands since I was 16 and I've won a competition of "The Fastest Guitarplayer" back then. I'm still remembered for that. :)

I agree completely with Aaron Cheney: most nu-metal players only think about looking like a psycho-path and having a serial killer image. Yes, you can counter that all 80's hair-metal poseurs looked like hot bitches... :D... BUT THE BIG DIFFERENCE IS, THEY NEVER TOOK THEMSELVES SERIOUS!
I mean, if you'd ask Stephen Pearcy or Sebastian Bach about those days, they'd probably laugh and make funny remarks and anecdotes... If you'd ask something like that from Head and Munky, they'd probably try to give you a mean look, make some cynical remark about how much life sucks and then continue their "I'm an arrogant rock star, and I don't give a crap about learning to master my instrument"

I'm not saying everybody should be a 2nd Malmsteen or Vai, but I AM saying that If you wanna be a guitarplayer, learn some chops, instead of tuning the damn thing so, that you only need to play 1-finger chords!

So I hate nu-metal! Sue me and my George Lynch/Warren DeMartini-lovin' ASS! :p

Re: RANT FROM HELL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am overwhelmed by the amount of unintelligent life forms that are drifting around here.

Welcome to the Internet.

FUCK EVERYONE ON HERE THAT THINKS THEY KNOW TRUE METAL...it is a perspective thing

You might want to tell that to Geoff Tate. He recently proclaimed that none of the Queensryche catalog is metal, which just proves that there isn't even an agreement between the bands and their fans, so why the hell should any of us agree on this topic...

Most peoplr on here also think that Led Zepplin, was a metal band...i think they should fall in the hard rock category myself

You are right that Zeppelin was not metal, but you are dead wrong in thinking that other people here, at this bbs, believe they were. Of all the idiocy that tra-la-las all over this board, I have rarely seen anyone call Zep metal. And since Zeppelin is the band that started me playing guitar AND a benchmark for my productions, I would be one of the first to jump on the ass of someone who makes such an uninformed statement. I will admit that there are plenty of idiots in real life that makes such stupid remarks

Wait for the new album, i think many of you OLD METALLICA fan will have a little foot in mouth problem. The albums after the Black album are justas good as good as their really heavy work...just geared into different genres.

I really want to believe that the old Metallica will return. But honestly, there are so many acts that say things like "Oh, we are going back to our harder edge" and when the new album comes out it sounds lame and tame. I've gotten sucked into to the hype far too many fucking times to take any band's word on what their direction is.

And I respectfully disagree that the black album, the newer portion of Garage, Inc., Load, and Re-Load had any serious shimmer to their original form. OK. So may be Load passes for a decent hard rock album.. but dammit.. I don't want sloppy slow drumming (Lars seems to suck at anything under 80 mph), horrible slide guitar (oh.. wait! almost forgot your wah Kurt!), and a singer that chimes in after he roped the cows back to the barn.

Black Sabbath also got sick of what is now apparently called the "Doom Metal" sound, and branched out after Master of Reality. But they still kept that thread of serious darkness and psychosis that premeated their catalog.

And my last and final rant the band Slipknot is not NU-Metal...

I thought you said it was a perspective thing? In fact, I could've sworn you said something like...

if it's heavy who gives a fuck...just enjoy what you like and don't shit on other peoples joy...that is retarded as fuck!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I would agree that Black Sabbath is pretty much the original metal band.
I don't think Zepp is a metal band, but I do believe they helped to usher in that type of music...heavier and intricitely arranged. Another band I put in this category is Jethro Tull - definitely not metal, but they were holdin' the door open....

Lopp - that's second time I've laughed out loud reading this thread...

As for nerd stuff...

50 points goes to the first person who can tell me what game this code is for and what it does:

"Up, Up, Down, Down, left, Right, Left, Right, B, A, Start"

flexing my nerd

i believe all your base are belong to us is from zero wing, a game for the genesis. i've always been more partial to "uh oh, the truck have started to move!" from metal gear.

uladine, that code was NOT just in contra, as most people believe-a great many konami games gave extra lives/goodies/etc with that code. i believe in the original contra, it gave both players 30 lives, and in super c, 10 lives..

i won't have a foot-in-mouth problem if metallica actually puts out something heavy, i'll just actually buy it :D

i like occasional tracks metallica has done since black, but typically, they're covers, and rarely do i like them better than the originals.

First off let me just say this:
ANYONE WHO DISSES ROB HALFORD OBVIOUSLY DOESNT KNOW WHAT TRUE METAL IS!!!!!

Vocalists like Rob Halford, Bruce Dickinson, Ronnie James Dio, Udo Dirkschneider and Ozzy defined what Metal was, is and will become. Anybody can growl and moan but hitting the notes that these guys could hit??? YOU KNOW YOU LIKE IT!!!! Zep is not what you or I would consider Metal, but, for their time they were one of the heaviest groups around. Its all relative to a certain time frame. When I was a teenager MY groups were Priest, Maiden, Accept, Saxon...groups like that. That sh*t was HEAVY for the time. Obviously the stuff of today is heavier and what I listened to seems kinda light. Do you think that in 20 years YOUR music is gonna seem heavy to your kids??? Will the groups of today even be listened too or talked about the way my groups are??? Only time will tell.

I'm not trying to argue or anything, but I don't think music can really get much heavier than it is today. I mean there are some bands out there that are purely trying to be as heavy and as extreme as possible, totally forgetting about musicianship and sucking ass, but theyre still heavy as fuck.

And not that Korn is baddass or anything, but I think they will be remembered as the band that ended grunge. Just like nirvana is remembered as the band that ended hair metal. When Korns first album came out they had there own sound and you can't argue that. Yea other band have mixed rap and rock before them, but they made a whole new form of "metal flavored" music. As for Linkin Park and Puddle of Mudd and whatnot, yea they'll be forgotten. But so will most other forms of POP music.

As music gets bigger as a whole, the artists get smaller. Anyone can start a band today. Music isnt an esoteric thing like it was in the 70's and 80's. That means more bands. More bands means shorter staying time. Bands will never get as big as they used to.

Look at Techno. It's almost a "do it yourself" artform. I dont know many people who can name 5 techno artists, but the genre is huge. It seems like music is going to go through a weird implosion or something.

Back in 1984 I thought that metal was as heavy as it was ever gonna get. How could it possibly get any heavier?? Hell, nobody but Michael Angelo played with more than 6 strings. With technology today I have learned to never say never.

In Defense of myself!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

AS for the Led Zepplin comment, if you backtrack far enough through this post you'll find it. I don't want to have to sift through all of this shit again or i may have to rant again. My point is if you like it and it's heavy cool, if you like and it is elevator music it is cool. Whatever , just everybody be more objective around here...thats all i was getting at. Bands can get heavier and will. Nile...Black Seeds Of Vengeance is probably some of the heaviest shit i have heard in a long time. I never said that i didn't like and justice, i just said it was hypocritical for everyone around here to talk about how they hate the no mids guitar sound, and then say that And Justice had the best tone on any of their albums. Rob Halford i think is the shit among the high pitched singing guys. His new album is OK, but Painkiller was the absolute shit!!!! King Diamond i beleive trounces the man in the vocal department, but that is a matter of opinion, and i am sure many will disagree. AS for Metallica haveing sloppy slow drums, maybe slow but not sloppy. Tell me one song that Lars plays something off the beat that isn't intentional. I think Zepplin would have kicked my ass if i grew up at that time, but i didn't...I am not an asshole, but, ok i am an asshole but i am an objective one. Something doesn't suck because i don't like, that is ignorance. I can appreciate anytype of music or band for what they are...something i think that alot of people can't do. Because they are son hung up on what they listen to that everything else sucks and so on and fucking so forth. I like it all, and respect it all but i c.........fuck piss on this i am done!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Have a nice night...my medication, where is my medication!!!!!!!!!!!!
