Why have multiple guitars?

I've only ever had one guitar and one bass at the same time.. probably because of lack of money due to silliness like paying bills and buying food and clothes instead of guitars!

At the mo I have a Hayman Comet 6 string guitar and a Stagg 4 string bass. In my hay day (hey, day?) I had a Rickenbacker 480 guitar and a Fender Mustang bass! Loved those guitars... *sighs*

Sold the Ricky to buy PA gear and my wife threw the Fender out of the bedroom window.. (long story)

Because they're there. :)

My goal has been to build a wide tone palette.

Also on the woman vs. guitar issue: The fight should never be "why do you have all these guitars?" it should be "where should we put all of these guitars?"

A couple of years ago I built a guitar rack out of PVC tubing so I could keep all my guitars (in their cases) in a single place, against one wall. A friend and his wife came visiting from St Louis to spend the holidays, and at one point, my friend told me she really liked the rack. I asked her why: the neatness, the organization, what was it she liked?

"There's a limit on how many guitars will fit in it."

First, because guitars are like shoes. Not only do you need certain ones for certain jobs, but they lead you do do (or not) certain things. A Les Paul leads me to play and write very different material than a Telecaster. Hiking boots won't make you want to be a ballet dancer. So the guitar, by its character, leads you to play what it wants to play. Sometimes I'm in the mood for a familiar old set of slippers, or some sandals.

Second reason- because you play in cover bands and the easiest way to duplicate anybody's sound is- start with similar gear.

Third, if you have expensive guitars, you've got to have a beater (or several). Guitars for on top of the mountain by the fire, in the snow, played by a clumsy drunk, just can't be that pricey studio guitar- not on my budget.

Fourth, guitars are just cool. To ask why you would have several is like asking why you would have two cats. Do they not provide the same services? Guitars are often works of art, and are worthy if only for that. Why would you have 2 paintings? Would not one get the job done? The CEO says it's duplication of services. BFD.

Fifth, and most important- They will get you laid. It's just that as you get older and uglier, you need a better collection. This applies to women also. They just get laid by guitarists. Of course, many good men have been divorced over this very issue. Most of them then went and got laid. It's been a plan for over 10,000 years.-Richie

Seeing the guitars all hanging on the walls is like looking into the eyes of puppies at the animal shelter...you just gotta bring em home.

Why does Radio Shack ask for your phone number when you buy batteries????
They stopped doing that. But they also stopped selling anything and everything I ever thought about buying from them. Why did they do that?

One great thing about having kids who still live with you is that you can get them guitars, too, and then they're not yours, right? My 2 year old loves hers.

Because after a while of playing...music becomes encoded on to your DNA...one of the side effects is wanting to buy as many guitars as you possible can....and i just like guitars =]

Because life is short and whoever dies with the most guitars goes to guitarist heaven.

Absolutely right. "But honey, it's not mine, it's for the kids." I have 2 girls and both have guitars now. :D

I just have three . . . the Epi Airscreamer, Fender So-Cal, and an Alvarez steel-string that needs repair. And an Epi Viola bass, but obviously you can't use a guitar as a bass. Well, you can, but the White Stripes suck real bad.

Actually, I could live with just one of the electrics. The Airscreamer plays a little nicer than the So-Cal, and I like the scale length better. But the So-Cal is pretty cool too, so I'll keep it around until one of the kids wants it . . .

The REAL reason...

Because guitarist are fickle, indecisive folk...

I have a bunch of guitars because they're all tuned to different keys.. E, Eb, D, drop D, and drop C for now. And of course an acoustic and a bass.

1. because they have different colors?
2. because they're there to be bought?
3. because I only have 6 and can't wait to buy the other 3000?
4. because I like to kiss and cuddle them one by one?
5. because I have too many sets of new strings and not enough guitars?

ahhhahaha (mad scientist laugh...)
I vant zem aaaaaaalllll! Zey vill be all miiiiiine! (I wish...)

umm, do I have a problem......? :rolleyes::eek::D:D:D

I guess I just sort of "collected" all of them.

I started out with this crap guitar as a beginner called a "Gremlin." It didn't last long after I discovered that string action on a better guitar was below 1/2 inch off of the frets, and that's no lie. This thing sucked.

I saw an article in some magazine like Metal Edge or something and saw some dude playing a BC Rich. I figured if he was playing one, they had to be good, so I bought a Mockingbird NJ Series at the shop where I took lessons.

My BC Rich wasn't sounding too hot, and started having some playability issues due to a missing screw in the bridge, the sounds of a dead fret, and just a lot of buzzing. I held on to it, but replaced it with a Fender Telecaster Plus (USA) after searching for a new guitar. I also tried to expand my playing style into something other than Thrash Metal, so I figured it was a nice guitar. Besides, it was "pretty" and I couldn't resist not getting it.

My ex-girlfriend's brother had an Ibanez EX180 that had some electrical issues or something. I "borrowed" it to try to fix it. We broke up, and the guitar stayed behind.

My now-wife knew I wanted an acoustic and loved the "cut-away" designs, especially when in black with white or cream piping. To express her love, she bought me my Gibson Shadow Six for me as a b-day gift one year.

Now, it's years later and I still want a BC Rich Warlock.
