Why does MIDI always crash my computer??

Every *****ing time I do anything involved with MIDI, CRASH.
Even when I go to a website that has crappy MIDI music, CRASH.
This happened when I upgraded to a P4 1.4 gig, and a GeForce3 Ti 200 graphics card. There's no conflict when I check, but something's seriously wrong.
On my MOBO, IRQ's can't be changed. Graphics and sound are on the same channel.
Help!
 
what are you using for your MIDI interface? USB device? soundcard? Onboard joystick controller?
 
You don't want to have Graphics and sound sharing the same IRQ. What operating system are you running? I can tell you how to change your IRQ once I know that.

You can change IRQs on any Windows OS, but the exact procedure varies.

sorry for the delay

I have 98SE. I'm using an Audiophile 24/96, and my MOBO is a P4VXMS.
I can't change IRQ's in my systems/device manager.
I've moved my sound card to another PCI slot, but it still has the same IRQ channel.
Is the problem my MOBO?

Go into your MOBO BIOS and disable one of the serial I/O ports that you’re not using (COM 1 or 2). If you don’t use you printer port you can also disable that in the BIOS. This will free up more IRQs.

Remove the sound card in the device manager and uninstall the Audiophile software. Next physically remove the card and reboot the PC without it. Now shut down and reinstall the card.

When you reboot your PC and go through the install process the sound card should grab the first available IRQ -- either 3, 4 or 7, depending on what you freed up.

If that doesn’t work let me know. There is one more thing to try.

WOW!

I freed up 3, 4 & 7, since I don't use any of those ports. Then,
before doing anything with the sound card, I checked in the device manager, and it suddenly showed up on IRQ 7! So far, so good. MIDI is running again, no crashes.

One more question.... since I can control MIDI with the Audiophile card, does the MIDI port address, or the MIDI port IRQ in BIOS make any difference? I didn't do anything to either one.
