Why does a thread get closed?

I have just read a thread and was trying to reply to help someone when I noticed that the thread was closed. Why do threads get closed? (assuming that it has not broken any forum rules)

It's always up to the OP to close a thread or not (unless a mod moves in due to broken rules) there could be a number of reasons why they close it but the #1 reason being that they got their answer and moved on.
 
That sounds reasonable although my other forums do not allow an OP to close it only the moderator after a request. Surely if here a thread is closed it should be removed as a) regardless of the OP satisfaction it could contain wrong information and b) it can result in folk like me wanting to impart important information to the group about something the thread says (or did not say)?

I'm just a newbie here trying to help, not trying to rock the boat :)
