Why do I sound like I'm singing in a tin can when I direct monitor

This only happens when I direct monitor
I'm using an Alesis io|2 interface with a SE2200A Mic (not that it matters)
I turn on direct monitoring and it's like I'm singing in a tin can as I hear myself trough my headphones, as I sing
But when I listen to the vocals when finished it sounds fine no tin can effect
Maybe I have to tweak the ASIO4ALL driver settings?

Any suggestions
This is my first time using an interface and XLR mic, does this naturally occur? When monitoring
Or do I need to tweak the settings

Thanks for the help

This happens when you are hearing the mic live through your interface AND through your software. There is a slight timing difference between to two, which makes it sound like that. Turn off the software monitoring and just use the hardware monitoring.
