Why can't I install another soundcard?

Heard that I cannot install another soundcard on my laptop. I have an IBM Thinkpad R40 that came factory installed with a SoundMax sound card. When discussing buying a better soundcard with a friend who has the same model computer, he said that I could not install another sound card on my comp. and it would be better to upgrade to a Mac 5.

Do comps come with fixed soundcards that can't be replaced?

Is it a better idea to just upgrade to a Mac 5 financially and musically(is that a word)?

Your thoughts on this please?

You can usually disable an on-board sound chip even though you can't physically remove it.

If your computer has a USB port or a PCMCIA slot, you can certainly work with better third-party audio interfaces than the SoundMax chip.
 
PCMCIA card?

Can i get one of these for 150 or under?
I looked around and they r expensive.

How does a breakout box work? What's required to use one?
Can I use one of these with the PCMCIA card?

Is there a way to reduce computer noise other than a breakout box?

thanks for your help, i was flustered for a second, thinking i was stuck with choosing between soundmax or firewire.

refresh , read my newbie articles on here.
get an athlon pc with a good soundcard like a audiophile or such.
plonk powertracks at 29 bucks on it and get 48 digital audio tracks and a superb sequencer for midi.
or magix or any of the other fine software i mention in the article.
with the money save by not buying a g5 you can get some nice mics and preamps. sound card, mics and preamps are what dictate sound recording quality NOT computer choice.
 
Ok seeing that you are using a LapTop as a recording machine the easiest and most reliable thing to do (which is what all the others are pretty much pointing to.) Is look at the External Sound Cards. That way you will can avoid opening up the machine and not have to pick up a soldering iron. I am not on the up and up on which ones are better than others. I am sure that if you go over to the Computer Recording/Sound Cards Forum you can see what some of the others are using and recommend. (External Sound Cards are priced higher thouh keep that in mind.)
