Please, please help………..I’m pulling my freekin’ hair out on this one:

I’d like to record my vocal and guitar simultaneously onto separate tracks in Cool Edit Pro. Here’s my gear setup:

One vocal mic into Peavey Unity Series 1000 stereo mixer’s XLR input.

Another instrument mic into Peavey Unity Series 1000 stereo mixer’s XLR input.

Peavey Unity Series 1000 stereo mixer’s “Tape out” RCA jacks (two) to computer’s 1/8” input.

Does anyone know how I can configure Cool Edit Pro to have one track to “listen” to and record input Left and the other to “listen” to and record input Right?

I’ve already tried and failed at configuring the header area for each track (the "Rec1" button) to accept left channel signal on one track, and right channel signal on another track.

I’ve already tried and failed at panning hard left (on the mixer) for the guitar track and hard right (on the mixer) for the vocal track.

Many thanks in advance,
rbracch

I'm not familiar with cool edit but you might have to pan hard r/l on the mixer record it as a stereo track and then split the stereo track into two seperate mono tracks.

yea...make sure the 1/8" jack is a TRS and panning right and left will do the trick....click on the input for track 1 and choose left channel, and on track 2 input, choose rt channel and you will have 2 mono tracks....

Thajeremy has it right. the only other way to get more than one track recording a separate single, is with an interface like the FP10 or something along that line

Make sure CE is not set to record stereo tracks. You may have to go through and specify each track to record in mono and then watch to see which input is assigned to each track. It should be part of the automatic track naming convention. or you can set it through preferences. That used to trip me up all the time until I got used to thinking of it systematically. Drove me nuts.

You have already panned your input instruments to the right and left.
I think you should pan main output as well.
You need to route signal which comes from the left to go out to the left. If you don’t do so mixer will mix them together to the centre.
That’s the part you’ve been missing.

In Cool Edit do next:
On the first track set up for recording MONO "L"
On the second track set up for MONO "R"
You need to connect stereo cable from Peavey’s Line Out to Line in on your sound card.
Line in input has to be selected for recording on your software mixer.

good luck

Yes this can be done. Pan hard right and left as you said. Record your track and you will get a stereo track vocals left and guitar right. Be careful to keep the two as well separated as possible - perhaps put the guitar amp in another room? Once you have the track go into waveform edit view - click on just the "R" side, highlight it and select "copy to new" from the edit menu. Then select "insert info multitrack" When you return to multitrack view you will have a stereomono copy of the track on a new channel. Repeat for the "L" side. When you are done "destroy" original blocks.
