why can't I? What are the requirements for an ideal mic that will record guitar, voice, bass, samples, etc.?

you used to be able to buy a Crown PZM at radio shack....for 35 bucks!!!!!

oh the " good ole days : :)

go ahead

Why not? We have to have fun sometimes. Through the years I have tried all kinds of whacky things from radioshack. Recording acoustics through lapel mics, using pzm boundary mics mounted on plexiglass for drum overheads, and my favorite, I once put a 20 year old radioshack highball mic at one end of a long empty room and had my drummer sit at the other end and record various grooves - these made great loops for thrash/trash.

For me its all about having fun. Don't get me wrong, I would rather you buy one used sm57 than two new radioshack mics, but sometimes it pays to experiment.

BTW, I haven't posted for awhile and my registration stuff must have expired. Geez, I've been kind of busy finishing med school and this is the cold reception I get. Just kidding. Its good to browse through and see the old names again.

When I was younger, I'm talking like 14 here, I had a few RS mics and one day aquired an SM57 ($100 was a lot for me at the time for a mic and a HI-Z cable) and thought it was the best mic in the world!!!

I used to go to pawn shops and look for radio shack/shure made mikes. You just look into the xlr plug, it would say shure right on the plug. They were great for live gigs and such...

some mics that radio shack sells sound pretty good. but i would go with an old 57 before buying one from radio shack.

I was a store manager for five years. Trust me, they all sounded like crap. At least from 94-99 they did.

I used to bring them home and try them out with a decent set-up I had back then. I would not have bought any of them. I wouldn't have even ripped off mics that poor if I was that kind of person.

I had a very knowlegable guy that worked for me part time. He ran a small studio on the side and had engineered many of the albums produced by the USAF Mid-America Band while he served on active duty.

He thought they sounded like crappola too.

Most home recorders and pro's wouldn't be caught dead with a RS mic unless it was the PZM. That was the only decent mic they ever carried. I don't know who made it for them.

RS caters to average consumers looking for something that will work. They really don't care how well it works, nor do they know how it should work.

In case anybody was wondering why the original poster was asking this particular question, the little heading for this forum does say:
Which mic should I buy, why can't I buy it at Radio Shack, and which way do I point it?

The answer is: because you will be mocked. Perhaps by people on this forum. Perhaps just be people milling around on the sidewalk outside the store (or in the concourse of the shopping mall ... or even in the food court, you never know).

Thier drum mikes work ok too. I found my pair of pzms at a pawn shop and got the pair for $15 they had been there for years and noone had even asked to see them before. I did the Mods online and I am happy with the results.
