I'm going to order today a pair of M-Audio BX5 Studiophile monitors. Everywhere I look online the price is the same. The local guys even have the same price. Normally I'd buy locally in a heartbeat but the last time I called them they didn't seem to care about selling to me and since it's a bit of a drive in a direction I don't go often I'll order this time. But from whom?

i'd order from MF or american musical, but i'd get wharfedales and not those fisher price, i mean m-audio, speakers. or alesis m1's. have you heard something good about these m-audios? i know a handful of people who hate them

I've had very good experiences with the company, and I've heard enough about the speakers to be comfortable with the quality for the price. I've heard people who didn't like them who later admitted they never learned how to use the adjustments. They may lack a bit on the low end, but I plan to eventually add the SBX sub woofer.

MF is usually fast and low cost. I've never had a problem with them.

I have also purchased from at least a half dozen other firms, and most do OK.

I buy most of my equipment from a place called Music Center Inc., in Wisconsin. They have a web site, but give the best prices over the phone. They generally beat any other price I've found, and I've been ordering from them for nearly 20 years. I'm not affiliated with them in any other way than a satisfied customer. Their number is 1-800-697-9393, the guy I deal with there is Tom.

I've had good luck with Sweetwater. I almost always find the best prices at Pacific pro Audio, which also does mail order.

I've ordered from all, except 8th street and never had a problem. Sweetwater and Sameday were both very pleasant to deal with and I got the orders a day earlier then expected. Plus, Sweetwater sent free candy and a free copy of Electronic Musician.

they should send a bottle of sweet water with every order!!!!!!!

They DO send candy with their catalog!!!

Really true.

VT, I've been ordering only from companies that will agree to *double-box* my shipment. Most of the big retailers will, but you have to get a promise from someone on the phone; otherwise, your order may show up as a few of mine used to, with one box and even open flaps. Not a good way to start. Even with a verbal promise, I recently received an order not double-boxed--I refused acceptance and switched companies with good results.

By the way, don't hesitate concerning those M-Audios. I have a pair that I'm very very happy with, and if you search on-line, you'll find many pros and home recorders happily using the BX5s. I find the highs and mids and upper lows to be excellent, smooth and flat and non-fatiguing, although (like any monitor with a small woofer) you'll want to think about adding the SBX sub later to flesh out the deeper bass. Adding the sub produces, from what I've read and heard, one of the best sub-$1000 monitor systems now available.
I especially like--and use--the subtle EQ tuning available, which allows you to
adapt the BX5s to your own studio space without knocking down walls. Other good choices are certainly out there, but the BX5s are solid as long as you can accept the smaller bass output from a monitor with such a small footprint.

Good luck,

J.

Just to add to my previous post, I've ordered from every company on that list except Same Day Music (which is basically zZounds, and I have ordered from zZounds). Service was actually pretty good at all of them, but I do prefer Music Center, as their service is also good and they beat the rest of them on price.

GC has the Event TR5N's for $249/pr......

but back to your question, ive had good experiences with AMS, 8th Street and ZZounds......

I've had good luck at MF and 8th street. Clue- if you join ASCAP, MF will give you 5% off on everything.-Richie

Cool - Lemme know how you like the monitors.

I've ordered from MF and 8th Street, both are solid outfits. MF took a mixer back after the return date expired when it became clear that the thing really didn't work. They also credited my card with the return shipping. Can't complain about that. The only downside is that some things at MF are "non-return items" - such as the M-Audio DMP3.

8th Street can have inventory MF does not carry. I bought the DMP3 and a bunch of mics here. Once a shipment arrived missing a shock mount. I called them and they shipped another out the next day. Stuff like that makes me pretty comfortable with them.

If you contemplate a big purchase from an online vendor, remember that if you click on their paid link from this site (or another we know of) the site will get a few percent referral fee. Every little bit helps.

It must have been bad luck for me that Musicians Friend had repeatedly sent me defective equipment. $2200 Marshalls that were screwed up and sparked.. $1000 preamp/processor that glitched out..etc.

All the other companies in the list have been fine. (Aside from the fact that Sweetwater still spams my email even though I haven't ordered from them in 4 years)
