Who would be interested in a Neve/1176 combo?

I have a good friend who is a very accomplished electrical engineer and machinist. He had been making parts for nuclear missles and then custom building hi-spec communications units. Recently he was laid off and now does nothing all day.

Out of his extreme tech knowledge accompanied by his boredom, and my need for gear, we started talking about making pre amps and compressors, and I found him some diagrams and spec sheets. Everything seemed very simple to him, compared to what he was used to making...and he had pretty much anything he would need to make it at home.

We are thinking about a Neve 1272 (or 1073)/ Ueri 1176 combo rack unit. If he is successful, he said he may do some more for people we knew personally that had studios. Just wondering if this sounded interesting, and how much you would honestly pay if you had the same opportunity....keeping mind this is a hand made job not by a big company you would know of, or a famous recording person or anything.

This is just out of our conversation, and a curiosity more than anything. Who knows, he may go back to making bombs tomorrow...but he said he's rather help me make music.

Interesting?!

Sounds like the greatest idea anyone on this BBS has ever had!

I would love to buy one if the price is right. In fact I would be most interested in just the cuircut board to reduce price, if possible. I would be happy to mount it in a rack and add the I/O.

Do you think he would want to deal that way?

Go call him and answer right away........I'm waiting.:D

parts, as in tranformers, power supply, and such would be the parts specd on anything we find on spec sheets. They all seem to list manufacture....like the one I was looking at had Sowter transformers and another called for St Ives. Knowing his engineering analness:) he would have to buy the best he could find. He's doing some research into the stuff that I don't understand. I gave him some websites to start his search.

Any other parts would be custom built in his shop at home. He makes great looking components for other stuff, just never had interest in recording stuff.

Dude, I dont know about this detail crap, I'm a musician not an engineer ;)

jake-

I didn't mean to make it sound like we were going to sell something, cause thats not the point. Just a couple guys (with too much time to blow sometimes) getting their ideas together. The only reason we even talked about more than one is that it looks WAY cheaper to buy transformers and stuff 10 at a time, opposed to 1 at a time.

Assume you could get 10 people on board to help front the cost... what would that cost be? Is he charging for his time to assemble or is this out of the gooness of his own heart ;)

We'll try to put some things together in the next several days and figure out how or even IF we'll go about it. I'm out of town right now, and we probably wont talk again for a week or so. Until we talk again, I can't make any guesses about anything at all. BUT, I do think the unit can be built for not too much (parts). I have seen guys build an 1176 clone by itself for under $400.

Even if we do one, it may end up a total piece of crap and we just shelve it and quit. Who knows. The recording world is new to him and the electrical world is new to me. I'll mark this thread for myself and report back on it when we talk.

It is good to see the interest, though. If it works out it could be great.

middleman-

yeah, I got the "combo" idea from following the neve and 1176 projects there:). His unit came out looking better than I imagined one would. He's a very talented guy. Since he has the finished pics up there, I'm going to show Scott to see what he thinks of that.

Those guys do alot of d-i-y over there, and inspired my whole conversation actually.

OT, I know, but H2H.........did you receive that last email OK?

If you look at the prices for things like that, it's obvious that lots of people would be interested. The question is, can he make them for a price that is competitive.

If he has almost everything to make one, then definitely give it a go, listen to how it sounds, experiment to see if you can make it sound better, and then sit down and calculate how much the going price would be, and then come back and tell us. :)

If the price was right, I 'd take four. Seriously.

COUNT ME IN!

For the right price I'd take one or two.
I was looking to pickup something similar this year maybe the Toft ATC-2 so I'll keep my eyes open for your response.

This is assuming it washes my clothes for me and cleans the bathroom as well.

How about

a two channel linkable 1176? Now that would be cool! A nice tube pre , LA2A combo would be sweet.

Still I would be interested in this too. Sounds great.
