Brand new recording from my new band. Any comments warmly appreciated.

The guitar in the intro needs work. It's terribly muddy. It also has too much low end rumble. The delay panned to the opposite side is a good idea, but it's too wet.

The lead guitar on the left gets real harsh on some of the higher notes during the solo after the first chorus.

The lead vocal sounds like it's 20 feet in front of the band. And it's very muddy - especially during the intro.

THe cymbals have that trademark SoundCloud swirl. Snare sounds real good. I'm having trouble hearing the kick.

I like the harmony vocals.

I like the bass sound. It might be just a bit on the rumbly side. But not super bad. It has real nice power. It's dominating the kick a little bit tho.

This was a BITCH of a mix.

I want it to sound what we sound like live ... but the balances and levels really ... well ... are confused in my address.

Everything you say is correct. You've known me for many years ... and this is a puzzle. I'm puzzling still.

... largely because of desire of the presentation of the band ... as live.

I've got basically a myriad of frequencies that occur at different times in the piece (guitar goes from woofy to strident, for instance) ... and I'm trying to get the recording to work nice w/ that challenge ... making it what the band sounds like live ... without having to change the fuck out of what it actually sounds like by studio chops (which you know I've got).

I'm particularly distressed by the background vocals.

I've panned them wide so that individuals can be heard distinctly ... and yet ... I'm uncertain that was the right approach.

At the end of the piece, I bring the pan down from singers at 70% l/r to 30% in tight ... and it sounds better. Yet ... I can't get the band's sonic stage distinct by bringing the vox in tight. There's too much freq bunch in center ... and it stomps over the sonic spread.

It's a conundrum.
 
I thought the BGV's were maybe the best part of the mix.

They're sung really well, but I think I've got them a bit too wide. I'm second guessing myself too much, mayhap.

Point taken on the rest, working on the a new mix now. How strange for me, huh? :D
 
New mix up. Brought the vox in ... made significant eq changes in them. Addressed your beef on the electric ... both the thud mud and the shrill. Rebalanced, rotated the tires, and topped off the oil.

It's good to drive. :D
 
All 4 part harmonies now added and mixed in ... plus harmonica.
