sorry that's not exactly what I meant.

I have great guitar stuff at my studio.

marshall, mesa and vht stacks.

guitars from PRS, Gibson etc.

but... i have to mic all of those. There is a preamp called the "mesa recording preamp" that is suposed to sound (according to mesa) like "a perfectly mic'd amp in a perfect room." This could obviously be BS since it's mesa telling me. But it would be nice to be able to record good sounding guitars and not have to deal with a middle man aka a mic. right now i've been pretty happy with my md421 but y'all are selling me on royer in a big way hahaha :)

jay.

I know which Mesa you are talking about, but have not had the chance to use it yet. personally, it may be a very useful piece, but I certainly wouldn't count on it for direct recording. Definately don't sell your other amps to buy it. Also, with something like that I would most certainly not buy it until you have a chance to try it out. I am a big fan of the real deal and also have some nice guitar stuff, yet I also have a POD. Emulation can be a VERY useful tool. It can actually allow you to do things that are very hard with a real amp. But, like every other tool, it has its time and place. Typically its time and place are not my primary guitar tracks (unless the bands amps really are that bad). I would always reccomend trying things out first, but that is not always feasible either. Some things seem to be a little safer to buy on reccomendation. My experiences with the Royer tell me that it is most likely one of those safe buys. A glorified Mesa DI? I wouldn't buy it without putting it through the paces first (which is kind of sad because in general, I love Mesa gear....especially the bass amps...).
