Microphone or Soundcard??

I get really bad interference when I record through the mic input on my soundcard. Is this most liekly to be mainly the fault of the cheap £30 microphone, or the (no doubt cheaper) soundcard?

Thanks

Probably the cheap preamp in the cheap mic input of the cheap soundcard...youd do better running the cheap mic into a cheap preamp and go into the cheap line input of the soundcard.......

A preamp is a device that takes a mic signal up to a usable line level....the mic in of your soundcard has one, but its very very poor.....if possible, try recording something again thru the mic in, watching your levels, make a mp3 of it and post it....hard to tell the source of the problem without hearing it...

What mic & soundcard do you have?

Even cheap mics like the SM57 ($70) make awesome vocals mics, so unless you have a $5 Radio Shack mic, more than likely the soundcard is your (main) problem.

Check this site out and see how your soundcard measures up. (I love this site)

You also might want to check you cables too, they can cause some nasty buzzs and hisses if they're not up to snuff.
