I was wondering if anyone on here could help me with recording vocals with the real time effects in pro tools? Is there a significant difference when doing this?Any help would be apreciated.Mainly curious about compression or eqs.Rap music.thanks

The problem with using real time effects is... if you get too much of something or don't like the effect you cant remove it. Record dry or with minimal effects, it's easy to add whatever you want later in the mix, and when you add effects later you can undo them if they are not quite what you want.

I have to agree also, I never permently use reverb in realtime. Only through an AUX so the artist can hear the vocals with some warmth as they record. I do the actual print of reverb when I'm mixing. For me it's the only way.

Yeah be careful of using effects as your recording for all the above reasons. However....I can't say for sure, but I think that in at least recent versions of PT LE, plug in's can be applied on the "inserts" at the top, but exist in such a way that they don't actually effect the recorded signal. Do a test, I'm pretty sure this is the case, but not positive.

I'm not totally sure how to do this cause I don't but I've seen it described literally hundreds of times on forums in the past year. I believe you can set up an aux track in ptle. put the effects you want on that aux track then send the vocal track to that track and you should have a track with the plug ins and effects you want that will allow you to hear your effects during recording. then when you're finished recording go back to your vocal track and put the plugs you want on it or keep the aux track if you're going to use an effect on more than one track send other audio tracks you want effected to the aux track and that'll save you cpu space. sorry I ramble a lot when I try to describe stuff because my mind works way faster than my fingers. Hopefully this makes some kinda sense or someone else on here can clean up what I said a bit.

Personally, I would like to see more performers rangling their own effects and practicing with them prior to recording. Mike Patton a fine example. He controls all his own effects, and live the sound guy just mics the his speaker and its done. The effects actual become an integral part of the performance and they are consistant in both live and recorded form.

In much the same way that guitar players use effects to alter the tonality of their instrument, so too can the vocalist. I think this takes considerable skill to master, but the result can be unique and effective (no pun, really).

Of course, this will not work for most performers, or anyone who simply wants their voice reproduced in a way that's flattering.
