While I am at it, compression anyone?

Also, with reference to the compressor, could someone please explain threshold. Now I am aware that the threshold marks the level at which the compressor kicks in. Above the threshold, the sound is compressed, below, it is not. But the question is this, The threshold knob has negative numbers, how do they translate in terms of level. Is it that as the number goes lower, and ultimately to zero and past into the negative, is the threshold going down and lower levels are also being compressed or is it the other way around. P.S. I am fairly new to recording and the compressor, mixer, computer and keyborads are all knew. I was a full time musician about fifteen years ago and then left the business. Upon returning, I found amny things different and began to get interested in engineering, not just playing. Though i have substantial playing experience in the studio, actually running the studio is yet a different story. therefore, some help and advice would be great. And, this seems like the place to get that.
 
Yes, as you set it to lower numbers, lower level signals are trigering the side chain...
