What are you using for overheads and is it digital or analog recording?

2 Opus 53s as overheads

digital recording

the reason for this question is because i am wondering if i should get rid of my beyerdynamics and get SM57s instead...

just want to know if anyone thinks my set of beyers are better...

thanks again

if it were me, I would use the 57's.

but record using both, and compare the recordings back to back, lightning quick, for 2 weeks.

With which will i get a better sounding drum?

Better sounding drums will get you better sounding drums.

As for the mics, I'd think either option should work fine. They'll be a lot different in their applications, obviously. You're talking about a condenser and a hypercardiod dynamic (the Beyers), both with very small, compact diaphragms. Versus two medium-sized dynamics (sm57's) with standard cardiod patterns.

Being a smaller-diaphragm condenser, the snare mic you're using right now (Opus 87) will likely have much better transient response than a 57 ... though it probably won't reject very much, and will pick up lots of hi-hat, I'm sure. The tom mic you're using will probably have a similar response to the 57, but being a hypercardiod, it will have a tighter pattern and will probably reject a good deal more.

Overall, though, I'm sure you'll get better transient response and a flatter, more accurate reproduction of the sound source with the Beyers. This could be either a good or a bad thing, depending on the source ... how they are used ... and your personal taste.

that was exactly what i needed to hear...thanks chessrock...

just one more question:
you said it depends on how they are used...what do you mean by this?

placement, compression, eq, ya know.... how they are used.

so shouldn't he try

the Opus 67 on the snare instead, for better rejection of the hat, or does he want to pick up the hat because it's not miced separately?

Have you tried swapping the tom and snare mics, and if so, how did that sound?

Depends on how much hi-hat bleed he gets with the other one, and whether or not it's problematic for him. If it's not a problem, then it's not a problem.

second that emotion

I second that on all accounts. Spend a bunch of time tuning your drums and then do mic placement and you'll be very happy. You might try using hte 57 on the snare and the beyers on the toms, just so you have some different coloring going on.

cheers,
scott

i know this is an old thread but just for reference, i recorded with an opus 87 on the snare and sm57s on the toms recently and while the opus 87 sounds better to me on the snare than the sm57, it picked up a ridiculous amount of hat. The beyer sounded absolutely great when i tried it on the high tom, but i only had 1 so i went with the snare.

i'm done playing with different mics for toms and snare- i wasted too much time/money, now im just using sm57's....

my only other choice would be 421's, but right now, they would be out of my price range.
