I am still not sure.... I'm uncertain as to which studio monitors to buy. I like the sound of these three (and the budget...)

Alesis Monitor One /w RA150 amp
Alesis Monitor One MkII /w RA150 amp
Spirit Absolute 2 /w similar amp or RA150

Do any of you have experience with any of these monitors? (AND the RA-series amps by Alesis, for that matter)

I will use the monitors with a Fostex FD-8 multitracker and misc other gear.

I hear all monitors really sound their best once they are 'worn in' a little. Is this true? It *does* make sense...
:)

Who can give me some sensible advise?

I can't, but I'll answer anyways......... ;)

I would strongly advise against the RA-100 and any of the Alesis monitors and suggest you start looking at the active monitors - Tannoy Reveals or any of the Event actives PS6, PS8, or Event 20/20bas.........

Alesis makes some very good gear (ADATs, Masterlink), but monitors and amps aren't included in that category...

That's a first

My ears were content.. :)
And I have read quite a few reviews on the www and 90% of those were very positive about Both the Alesis and Spirit stuff mentioned in my initial post.

But I could ofcourse give 'yours' a try. Remember: I'm on a budget here.

There's lots more gear I'll need, so price is important here. Of course I'd gladly buy a $5000 dollar monitor system but that's the kind of cash I simply don't have.

Hey, if you like 'em...!

...but it's hardly a first that Alesis doesn't make good monitors or amps!!!!!!!!
(and hey... you asked for an opinion - of which I have a number of informed ones!) ;)

But anyways - if you like the sound then by all means, go for 'em (you're the one that has to listen to them, after all!)... just know there are better options and that are just as cost-effective. If you're dead-set on an amp/monitor combination - look at Yorkville YSM-1s (they will absolutely blow away the Alesis). At roughly around the same price as the Alesis, the Samson amps have a bit more to their specs than the Alesis amps, which suffer from lack of current and power capability.

Good luck...

Hmm...

Well, you sure got me thinking...

I'll check out the stuff you mentioned if I can find a store here in holland that
1. *has* it
2. Let's me test it. :)

Indeed, after all, it's the ears that count, right?

What's your budget? There are much better monitors for the same prices as the alesis, like the 6.5 reveals are onlt $369 usd,Yorkville yk-1 are $149 each, or if you spend a little more Tannoy system 600 are $549 or something similar. As for the power amps, the RA is useable but again there are better for the price. The advertising that alesis and similar companies have some great products and use thier name to push not so good products using their name.

Budget

I'm not sure how much the US$ is at the moment (I'm from holland) My budget would be about $600 for powered monitors or an amp/monitor combo. I don't want used stuff. Not when it comes to amps and speakers. :)

I have looked on the Internet for a bit and you guys here seem to be the only ones raving about the Yorksville stuff. I've never heard them (knowingly) so I'll still check them out.

I don't hear any of you on the Spirit Absolute 2 monitors, though I thought them to be pretty cool.

I'll go and see if I can find some independent reviews of the Tannoy stuff & availability in Holland now.

Dammit, you guys are sure keeping me busy! :-P

Bruce,

I posted this in another thread, but I didn't get a response, so I'm asking here in a shameless attempt to get one...

You like the Yorkville YSM-1's, right? Do you like the Yorkville amps? Specifically, their SR-300 Studio Reference Amp which Yorkville says is their best match for the YSM-1.

Also, is there any reason not to use a studio reference amp in as a speaker amp for a gig? I'm not talking as a permanent solution, but I'm assuming it would SOUND good - though, I suppose, somewhat flat. But there wouldn't be any way I could hurt it, right?

Thanks very much

Sorry OG - must've missed that thread -- (can't be everywhere!!!) ;)

Anyways - Yorkville is primarily a PA-oriented company, but they happen to make these budget nearfields that are excellent for their price. And much better than Alesis or NS-10s at a higher price!

Their amps are more PA-oriented as well, but they are very solid and clean... easily usable in a studio environment.

Cool, Bruce. I was trying not to sound whiny since I really appreciate all the time you and others spend on here steering us right. :) Thanks very much

I'll be taking a listen to them in less then a week and try to a-b them against Events and so forth. An advantage for me of buying Yorkville is that they are Canadian so I don't have to pay exchange rate.

If I like 'em, I think I'll buy those, then. Thanks again

You're welcome... let me know how they rate in an A/B against the Events!

Cheers,

Bruce

How about the new Hafler amps (TA1100 and TA1600)--$199 and $299 respectively? Anybody heard them? Plus, Hafler has the new M5 monitors that are supposed to be great ($399 pair). I've seen the TA1100/M5 amp/monitor package selling for $499 at GC. I'd really like to hear some more reviews of the new Hafler stuff.

hafler amps are great, very clean, low wattages, but clean.

Hey, the Alesis RA 100 has had its mixed reviews. The Alesis M1 actives have made some impressions out there, though. I have a set and really like them. But I must say that I had very little to choose from unless I was willing to order monitors and return the ones that I didn't like. I do wish I could have compared the Alesis to the Event PS-6 or PS-8. They seem to get rave reviews on this BBS. I would say that an active, bi-amped system seems to have much more going for it over passive monitors and a amp. Active monitors seemed to USUALLY be better matched to their amp and have active crossovers. At least that is what you want to look for. Well, that's my 2 cents worth.

Peace, Jim
