Cupp'la questions.
What is the difference between the Behringer B-1 and the B-2? Are these mics decent? Also, I was thinking of getting the AKG C2000 for $199. How does that compare with the Behringers? and would it be better to get two Behringer B-1's for the price of one AKG C2000? Perico

Long Answer:
I was speaking to a friend of mine recently and he made a statement that I agree with. He said the only decent equipment Behringer make are the truth monitors. (And out of interest the 6" active truths actually have better low mid response than the 8" which are more expensive. Strange, no?) Anyhoo, back to the matter at hand. Behringer make cheap equipment and are able to through mass-production techniques and economies of scale. Their outboard gear does not stand up to long term use, especially if used in mobile studio or live applications. They have no idea how to design desks for decent project studio applications. To put it succinctly, they are the first and lowest step on a long trail upwards.
What's my point? Well while I'm not a fan of AKG, I would recommend that you spend the money on one mic that's twice the price, especially when the cheaper product is Behringer. Better quality ingredients and more attention to detail in the cooking process make for a better and therefore more expensive cake.

Short Answer:
Behringer are crap. Buy AKG.

Dio24, Thanks for the information!
StillForgiven or Terry, Why do you say this?
Anyone else?

I disagree with the wide brush that has been swept here.
1) Behringer does achieve cheaper prices by economies of scale/mass production. However, isnt this true as of AKG, Mackie, Car Manufacturers, Electronics Manufacturers, etc. In addition, the way that Behringer really saves a lot of their costs is by "borrowing" others designs and manufacturing them in China using cheaper components.

2) That said - Behringer does have some pieces of gear that are quite usuable. Yes, Id agree that most of their stuff is garbage - but there are diamonds in the rough out there that are usuable. So no - I wouldnt agree that their monitors are the only good items.

I could go on longer...but in the end Id say this: I agree that you should stay away from Behringer microphones. However, Im not so sure you should jump on the AKG wagon. Instead, figure what applications you need a mic for. Then, research like crazy to find a list of mics that could fit the bill. Then - test out (or buy and use) a mic and find if you like it.

Oh I definitely agree with your last post Scinx. That is the best way to choose a mic.

Well then,

Isn't the performance the important thing here? Would a Behringer microphone not pick up a performance? How does it pick up sound differently? So, my main area of concern is recording acoustic guitar and vocals. With a budget of $100-$200 which mic and why?

Performance is important - yes. But - if a $30 mic picked up the exact same as a $3K mic - then why would anyone buy the latter? So to answer - it absolutely makes a difference. For mic choices - play with the search function or goto http://www.hr-faq.org (dont know if its still functioning)

There's so many to choose from, but the CAD M179 keeps coming up in these kinda conversations. Of course, you could pick up a couple of mics for that money that would give you plenty of different sound options. What preamps are you pairing with?
